That's too simple to put it all down to Mullery and Venables.
They may have been the catalyst but there was a serious undercurrent in British football in the 70's and young supporters were looking for more. At Brighton, they couldn't accept our comfortable position of neutrality and realised that Portsmouth weren't interested in us. At Palace, as violence escalated and their real rivals ( Millwall ) proved too nasty, too unappetising and frankly, far too scary, they went in search of more attractive options. Both sets of fans found each other and it grew from there.
It is of course, a ridiculous rivalry. It has no real foundation. A London club, surrounded by chimney pots, 4 miles from Millwall and 7 miles from Charlton, has as its main rival, a South Coast club, 40 miles away, backing onto the sea. No history of rivalry before the mid 70's until disaffected youths went in search and created one out of nothing.
Now, its established firmly in the minds of many and has become obsessive with those uncomfortable with our natural neutrality. They can't accept that this is an artificial, plastic rivalry, that the rest of football scratch their heads at in bewilderment. The rest of football laugh at us. They mock our insecurity and artificiality. It doesn't make any sense to others up and down the country. The A23 derby...have you ever heard anything so stupid in all your life.
Still, it will be perpetuated by those who don't know any better and get some sort of satisfaction out of it. The sort of people who, immediately BHA have lost, seek out the Palace result, to try and restore some sort of perverted balance. We lost but never mind, Palace did as well, so everything is all right, type of mentality.
Personally, I give 100% attention to my club and it doesn't matter a jot to me what Palace do. When we lose, I want to know why and how. When we win, I want to enjoy it and savour it. I wouldn't bat an eyelid if they were winning the Champions League or in the Conference. They don't register in my world. Too much more to worry about.
I wonder how the other football league club in Sussex, only 20 miles away from us, feel about all this?
Good post.

I've always regarded Portsmouth as the main rivals, that is until the internet and the high goonery of the palace gimps on it.

If the internet had never existed, or croydon excluded from it, then Palace wouldn't even register for me.

I dislike Portsmouth intensely, but they really don't give a shit about us. They already have a rival.

The fans have to mutually despise each other for it to be a proper rivalry, and although there are SOME on the Brighton and Palace sides who say they don't care, there are still enough on both sides for it to be considered a proper rivalry. Just look at the policing for the games between us.

Could have saved alot bovver if we had sorted the transfer pot and the wages pot out all those years ago:facepalm: Probably a £300+ million mistake???

I think most fans accept that choosing to waste money on CMS rather than securing Murray is the single biggest mistake made by the Albion, on the field, in living memory. Unsurprisingly Bloom points the finger at Poyet whilst Gus points it at Bloom and a few uber fans, who claim to be ITK, suggest it was Murray's fault in some way.

Whilst Ken Brown gets off scot free.

Ken Brown was a shit appointment by Bloom, so Bloom takes the blame. However he did learn from his mistake and got it right with Barber

If only TB and Gus had asked for my input at the time I would have told them to stick with GM if they couldn't afford both and I wouldn't even have wanted paying :lolol:

Well I don't know about in living memory, but probabaly the worst mistake in recent times. Having said that, nobody knew at the time that CMS wasn't going to prove a success at the Albion.

Hindsight as they say, is a wonderful thing.

There were quite a few of us that we're seriously pissed off that we didn't try hard enough to keep Murray. Sorry, no hindsight here I was fecking pissed off we let him go and would always rather have kept him than signed CMS, even back then.

Yeah I take your point, I loved Glen too and hated it when he was allowed to go. On the other hand if CMS had come up with the goals, Glen would have been quickly forgotten by a lot of people.

So hope Wareen Aspinall is right, and that we will be re-signing him.

Hey Icy. I'm sure you did but in 2011/12 it was pretty rare to hear that sort of stuff.
PS: i know its the argus. Different kind of comments over there of course but here's 50 or so comments when Murray's decision to turn down a contract was announced.
Full of anger at the club for not trying to keep him.
http://www.theargus.co.uk/sport/9040218.Murray_thanks_Albion_fans/

"We can replace him and probably with better"
"He will fail without Gus and the Albion."
"Unproven in the Championship joining a "team" struggling in the championship, massive gamble in my opinion."
"Misguided! The move shows that Murray lacks all footballing ambition. "
"I am not going to lose any sleep over a player who obviously did not want to play for us anymore"
"you need nippy skillful forwards in the championship that will take the one chance they may get, that was never GM."
"Whatever, He aint that good"
"We should use the money he would have had to help get LuaLua who is more of a player than Murray will ever be."
"Will Hoskins just signed so not such a bad day id say !!!!!"
"he is too slow and does not have the ball control for the Championship."

Shocking stuff.

And at the end of that season when he managed a paltry 6 goals to CMS's 15, those that thought it was a bad decision were harder to hear over the prevalent sentiment was that we got it right.

Of course this does conveniently ignore the fact that we spent the whole winter looking for Murray replacements after the Amex feelgood wore off it quickly became apparent we'd ****ed up and our style of play needed Murray or similar. Remember Paynter *shudder* and Vokes? Absolutely criminal decision regardless of his goals - we all thought a target man was needed to get the best out of CMS.

Anything to defend the beloved Gus
