Personally, I love the French and their country.
I am not so naïve as to think that plenty of other people do not share my view, but I certainly don't think it is a totally national feeling.

My missus is French.... I always sing along to the French National Anthem, mainly becasuse it is without doubt the best National Anthem around a great uplifiting tune much better than our durge. I think it would be a great show of unity and solidarity following the appauling acts of violence in France this week. I will then be cheering on the England team hoping for a win. If we do win I might even tonk my missus as I hum la marseillaise

Have you tried talking to them in .... well .... French ? I guess not.

No i haven't. There again i don't speak German,Turkish,Dutch,Danish,Swedish etc etc. Not sure what point you are trying to make. I've met many nationalities from Europe and the French still remain the most arrogant and unfriendliest in my opinion.

People tend to be friendlier when you try and converse with them in their own language ..... give it a go and I suspect you'll find the French much friendlier to you.

I will be there tonight singing it with gusto.

I am no lover of the French but at the end of the day they are on our side against the evils of extreme Islam and that's good enough for me.

Is of course the right answer.

Go looking for unfriendliness when you travel and you'll find it. But it's just as easy to look for warm, generous hospitality and great, lively company - and there's an abundance of both in France and its people, I've always found since I was a kid - and you'll find them in abundance just as easily.

Have you ever met a Russian?

I know this will sound like a true stereotypical story but it's true and reminds me of when I was driving up through France and stopped in a service station to fill up.
The guy in front of me in the queue to pay was English, he made absolutely no attempt to even give the pump number in French let alone anything else as he got louder and louder the guy behind the kiosk just kept shrugging his shoulders saying "Je non comprande pas"
I intervened in my very very basic French and got him served.
My turn, right then here we go. "Yes my friend, what can I get for you?" he spoke perfect English.

The old adage is that the vast majority of folk will meet you half way. In Germany and France, a smile and an attempt to communicate will invariably be answered with cordiality. I don't speak Dutch, though can understand it from German, if spoken slowly. I give the Dutch people the option of English or German and ask if this is Ok for them, and say in poor Dutch niet spreken nederlands, and always then get a warm reception. I too would have dug my heels in if a foreigner made no effort, and then thought that shouting louder would do the trick.

I hope not.

A National Anthem is an anthem of a country. I would not sing the French National Anthem in the same way I wouldn't sing The Star Spangled Banner, Advance Australia Fair, Land of our Fathers, Flower of Scotland etc

I have no love of God Save the Queen; it's an outdated, boring dirge. But it's what we're lumbered with so I will show my respect to my country's anthem and sing it. But no, I wouldn't sing another country's anthem and I hope the England fans tonight don't either.
