Luisma Villa - Spanish winger/attacking midfielder who has just clinched the Confrence title with Barnet. 25 years old, he got 13 goals in the league last season. Reached the Segunda División play--offs twice whilst playing in Spain. Somewhere between 100k and 250k would clinch him. Worth a punt IMO.

Chris Solly - Charlton RB who has been their POTS twice in the last 4 years. Still only 24 years old and been linked with Premier League clubs before. Get Dale Stephens on the phone to him ASAP. Would cost about £1,5000,000 but could be the answer to our RB problem for the next 6/7 years.

Gale Kakuta - The most optimistic shout on here. Kakuta is a left winger who is out of contract with Chelsea in the summer and despite being touted as a young star when he signed, he's never got going. However, he's currently enjoying a successful loan spell at Rayo Vallecano where he has scored 5 goals and picked up 7 assists in La Liga this season. Maybe if he looks at the careers of people who have came here from Chelsea (Bridcutt & Rohan) we might be able to tempt him.

Sébastien Bassong - Friends with Hughton. Experienced CB. Unwanted at Norwich, on loan at Watford who won't want him in the Prem. However, he would be a sensational signing for us. Only concern would be his wages. £250,000 would get him here IMO.

David McGoldrick/Yannick Sagbo - Would fill the loan striker role perfectly as an upgrade on O'Grady and both out of contract in the summer. McGoldrick looks like he'll be leaving if Ipswich go up, if not then Sagbo is not wanted by Hull and unlikely to be kept even if they go down.

Anthony Knockaert - Another optimistic one, but being released by Leicester at the end of the season as it stands. He was an absolute MONSTER last time he played in this league and he'd tear it apart again. I'd give a limb to see us sign him.

Ola Aina - A key member of the Chelsea U-21 team who seem to be all conquering. Can play anywhere across the back four. Back-up defender on loan for they year would be perfect.

Maynor Figueroa - Another player who is out of contract in the summer. Was on loan at Wigan earlier in the season so obviously not against the idea of dropping a division.

Which would leave us with a team of:

Stockdale
Solly - Bassong - Dunk - Figueroa
Kayal - Ince - Stephens
Knockaert - McGoldrick - Kakuta

Walton; Aina; Calderon; Crofts, Villa, Lualua/March; Baldock

Wish Burke had been as thorough as this last summer.

Some realistic shouts in there.

Some players I'd love to see but don't expect to.

Curtis Nelson (CB - Plymouth)
Chris Solly (RB - Charlton)
Tyrone Mings (LB - Ipswich)
Jed Wallace (RM/ CAM - Pompey)
Ben Pringle (RM/LM - Rotherham)
Anthony Knockaert (AM - Leicester)
Adam Le Fondre (ST - Cardiff)
Dom Dwyer (ST - Sporting Kansas City)
Cauley Woodrow (ST - Fulham)

I think luongo from Swindon is on a free in the summer, he'd be a very good addition to our midfield.

Also if Spurs were willing to loan Pritchard out again in the championship, we would be stupid to not go for him.

Any players less than say 6ft and we don't sign them. the days of titchy Brighton must be brought to an end, it's ridiculous some games how disadvantaged we are from the start because of this. And yes, before some clever b****** points out messi and maradona, since when are we in the market for those sort of talents? Exceptions exist but by and large our average joes get beaten by their average joes in many situations because we only come up to their knee caps! Time to start signing some orcs and leave the hobbits at home.

True. Doesn't mean we need to play like Pulis's Stoke, but over the last four years we've seen plenty of teams visit with towering but bloody good centre-halves (and effortless pace compared to the aged Greer, and just a pacey as CMS), also a tall midfield powerhouse or two, and possibly one or two other tall players in their first elevens. Making them able to mop up our feeble crosses with ease, and pose a serious threat at their set pieces.

I would like to have seen Greer, Bruno, JFC, sold or kept well away from the starting eleven next season.
Calderon is worthy of the new contract offered, but to be played wide right, as he's too slow as a RB now.
Stockdale has made far too many errors, but given another chance.

We need:
RB with pace, who can shut out quality Championship widemen.
LB - ditto.
Commanding centre-half with pace. A leader, to partner Dunk.
A creator or two in central midfield, preferably with pace, and forward thinking ... no hesitation in counter-attack decision making.
Pacey widemen, who can regularly score.
Two quality strikers.

Haven't got a clue who they should be. The very well known names, often touted, would want PL or parachute club wages. So we will have to be more savvy than that, in the way that M'boro got Bamford on loan, and NottsForest got Lansbury a few years back, when he was not the finished article.

I would sell CoG as I just feel Baldock aside we need a clean sweep up front with three new strikers coming in to refresh the attacking part of the team.

Dunk I would consider expendable only if we had a very good offer, I would not take less than £5m, otherwise I see no value in letting him go cheaply.

On reflection I would probably not try and resign any of the loanees (maybe Bennett, but I feel Halford's stock has fallen of late).

We need to start to afresh as much as possible and for Hughton to feel that it is his team. I am expecting a minimum four new starters from the summer dealings with a further five or six players adding depth to the squad. Priorities are forwards and fullbacks.

Agree with all of this, although:
-- I might reconsider COG provided we get in (at least) two quality forwards
-- you're spot on about Halford; he really hasn't done himself any favours of late
-- it's not just forwards we need; it's also goalscoring wide players, although this depends slightly more on what formation Hughton really wants to go for. He said on arrival that he prefers either 4-2-3-1 or 4-4-1-1. The latter would be good for Baldock as the withdrawn forward but for that to work, we really will need the right advanced forward.

You have the money from the Colunga sale, probably the money from selling COG, along with a chunk of the Ulloa cash...

I'd sell Dunk for 3 million if we can.

And then buy :

Zamora ( free )
Bassong
Lansbury ( if we can prize him away from his final year at Forest)
E. Bennett
The Ulloa clone we are scouting for.
S.Ward

We'd still need another striker, and central defender, of course. Dreaded loans, probably.

Get rid of uninspiring Hughton to start with.last decent manager we had was Gus and Tony failed to back him that is why we are where we are

Interesting.

Did Tony fail to back Gus, or did Gus fail to back Tony ?

(retorical - No need to derail this thread, it's not about Gus)

In would have a look at:

Jop van der Linden (Go Ahead Eagles) central defender
Danny Ward (Rotherham) left winger
Jérémy Hélan (Sheffield Wednesday) left midfield

By the seaside in West Somerset
Sell Greer and OGrady.
I think Danny Mayor at Preston would make a good left back (he currently plays midfield and was previously a winger)
Edwards at Burton as right back and Eric Bottehgin from Groningen and Bassong as centre backs
Wallace (Pompey scum) and Nicky Law (Rangers) as goal scoring midfielders with Knockaert to give some penetration and pace.
Borja from Atletico and Rubén Martin from Betis to form a two pronged attack

Pretty sure Bassong has been playing regularly for Norwich recently - in fact he played at the Amex.. And seems back in favour there...

Funny how the Norwich fans were slating him and laughing at us signing him a few months ago and suddenly he's their captain again (I think) - just shows a lot of them seem to have it in for Hughton & follow the pack....

Bassong could be a good option, but is another who seems prone to committing calamitous errors at times. Tbh central defence is probably the one position I feel most confident about the club getting right, lot of good players about who could forge a good partnership with Dunk. People like Alex Bruce and Paul McShane (both Hull), Matt Mills (Bolton) and Alex Pearce (Reading) all have their contracts expiring soon.

Am I the only person that doesn't think that Dunk is particularly special? Certainly not in the 3-5m bracket anyway.

No, me too. Not sure why but he makes too many mistakes and would be a liability in the prem at the moment (still young and improving if course so will get better). He's given away a fair few goals (and points) with errors this season. Probably no coincidence he played better under Sami than he has since Sami left as well.

Still the best CB we have, by a long way.......used as a scapegoat in recent months......let's not forget that without his goals we would probably be down.
