Well...I hesitate to do this, because I really wasn't criticising his performance today (as it happens, I think the complete lack of a fullback presence was to blame for the 1st, and he did pretty well with the block for the 2nd before the rebound was tucked away).

But what pissed me off was seeing him retweeting people defending him. He initially retweeted somebody who said "nothing you could have done about either goal" (fair enough), but then for Stockdale to retweet someone who said "defenders too slow to close down for both Boro goals"...sorry, but WTF ? Maybe they were, maybe they weren't. But I don't expect to see our goalie covering his own arse at the expense of his teammates.

Maybe it was just a misjudgement. But if that's his post-match Twitter routine then yeah...probably best he does take a break.

He's got previous!

I can't recall too many out-and-out HOWLERS from him, but what you remember from a good keeper is the incidents where you think "he really bailed us out there and earned us a point / a win". To date, I can recall ONE - that late close-range one-on-one block vs Cardiff at 1-1. That is the ONLY time I can recall him making a save when I really thought we were about to concede.

The rest of the time he'll deal with most of the routine stuff. But he really is nothing special IMO. He's not Graeme Smith terrible obviously. But he's not done much to persuade me that he's worth that 10-15 points a season a really good keeper will get you.

Yep, I feel EXACTLY like this. I do believe we paid over the top for an average keeper.

I thought the 2nd was a decent reflex save of the 1st shot, surely, the nature of a reflex save is that you don't have time to plan to put it round the post.

Pushing shots you can't hold onto away from goal and not right back where they came from is such a basic of goalkeeping that it should be second nature, even reflex saves should be instinctively pushed wide.

Definitely at fault for the 2nd not for the 1st however. Not his fault we lost as at the moment we don't seem to have any strikers

Especially when it is next to the post, because it's so much easier to put it out of play and end that immediate threat. And I speak as a goalkeeper, too.

Disagree, he's diving slightly backwards with the ball near the line next to the post - his hands are below him as he dives and he may have been moving in the opposite direction before the dive, the option to push it round the post was not there, there was also an opposing player on that side even if he did want to push it that way. Therefore he has tried to cushion it so the ball stays near him so either he can collect after recovering from his dive or a defender who should be goal side can deal with it, the fact that the player who made the initial shot was able to run through and put the rebound away says more about our static defence than the keeper.

Has he ?
Well I'm not a HUGE Twitterite (although maybe my 3k tweets would contradict this), but I don't recall too much from Stockdale that would've set me off prior to today. I've no agenda against him. But seeing his retweets on the way home tonight, I just felt genuinely annoyed, which is REALLY unusual for me. It was nothing to do with his performance, I didn't come away blaming him one iota. But sheesh...seriously. What was he thinking ?

I'm horrified to realise that Stockers reminds me most of Calamity Wayne Henderson. Full of BS, yacking in the media (social media) this time around, a new type of goal creating mistake most games, lauded for his distribution while the team tumbles down the table. I really thought he was going to do well for us but it seems my optimism was misplaced. Today was classic Hendo for the second goal. Gets down to make the save, but only pats it back in to the path of the onrushing forward for him to score. I'm pleased to hear that he is leaving Twitter alone for a day or two, but he'll be back. He seems to love to read his own words and funnily enough, just like Hendo, Naylor thinks he did nothing wrong today. Well my view, disputed I know by many, is that Hendo took us down. I really hope history isn't about to repeat itself with Stockdale.

The pressure built, and built, and then was released in an instant, by the best breakaway goal the Amex will see this season. The flawless Ayala won possession by his own corner flag, and ran the length of the field, exchanging a series of first-time passes with Albert Adomah, before the latter fired low at the bottom corner of the goal. Stockdale reacted smartly, plunging to the foot of his post to desperately make the stop. Unfortunately for Stockdale, on the evidence thus far, whether he is a good keeper is undecided, but he's definitely not a lucky one. His reaction stop served only to present the ball back to Adomah, who fired it home.

He does not command his box. His body language portrays complete fear and indecision. I have backed him over the last few weeks and hoped he would start to be a presence but after today I have lost confidence in him. I am wary of throwing Walton in at the deep end but I think the time has come to give him a go .

Amazed that people are defending him for the second - defending the indefensible. It wasn't even a shot, it was a kind of deflection of the Boro player that went at pretty routine speed to the near post, where a competent keeper should have collected or if a bit worried pushed away for a corner. The flapping out was unacceptable and betrayed a lot of nerves. Wouldn't blame him for first he made the Boro player make a choice and in the end it was a good bit of technique by Tomlin, Gardner and Baldock ballsed up easier chances.

David Stockdale has spent most of his career as a number 2 goalkeeper in more ways than one. It was optimistic in the extreme to expect he would be a suitable replacement for Tomasz Kuszczak. On the evidence so far, Brighton have massively traded down in that position.

Tomlin could have had a pen in the first half thanks to a rash challenge by Stockdale. He was at no fault for the second, I'd blame Danny Holla who made no effort to close Tomlin down. The second goal was soft and Stockdale to blame, just seen it on the FLS and he should have done much much better. Time for a rest, at least Ankergren is a good shot stopper.

Ha ha no sorry, I meant he's got previous with 'misjudgements'.....

I agree he shouldn't be on twit if he's going to be over sensitive about it. I do think he has to accept some culpability for the 2nd but not blaming him for the performance or defeat.

I never thought I'd say it but Casper IN. I really don't think he's as bad as some like to make out, he was decent enough for us in the first season and is actually a very competent keeper barring his command of the box. I'd like to see Walton given a chance BUT I'm not sure he's ready and throwing him into a 'relegation' scrap mightn't be the best idea.

He's made 4 mistakes that I can think of this season that have cost us goals, I defended him up till yesterday but there's only so long you can defend the mistakes he makes, it's costing us games. (Ex: Cardiff)

Before we hammer Stockdale too much perhaps we should say it might help if the rest of the defence did their job and bloody well defended properly and stopped giving the ball away and getting caught out of position. 1st goal- gave ball away then didn't mark up, 2nd goal- defence all over the place out of position, goalie stops 1st shot but still no cover.
