Could it be that we have also had a bid accepted and are in the process of talking with Clayton and his representatives ?

But unlike Middlesborough we won't comment until any deal is done ?

Seems very strange that we have an official up there if the deal is dead in the water.

At £3M (if accurate), glad we passed.

How on earth can Boro afford £3m and comply to FFP? I know they've got rid of some deadwood but they get shit crowds, have very little commercial income, and are without parachute payments.. I don't get it. Getting rid of some deadwood can't have freed up that much cash, surely?

They'll do well this year with Karanka and their £££,

So one would guess 2 million up front and the rest add ons for Clayton?. They have also signed Kike (Real Murcia - £2.4m) Emilio Nsue (Real Mallorca - Undisclosed), James Husband (Doncaster Rovers - Undisclosed + Swap)

That's impressive for a club who averaged 16k last year. They have a good competitive squad as it is. Fair play to them

I get the impression that this is their big push for the Premier League. We had one that was a bit shit or bust that turned to bust a couple of years ago. Now we are going down the sensible route.

I love how NSCers can decide that 1.5 to 2 million was an OK deal for Clayton but 3 million is too much. How the hell would any of us know that??

I don't get that impression at all. Steve Gibson is a cracking chairman who i have a lot of respect for. He isn't the type of person take a gamble and put the club at risk.

So how is he funding all this within FFP, because if he's not he is apparently gambling, no?

Looks like it's going to be a shit or bust season for Boro, they possibly see Clayton as the missing piece of the jigsaw and therefore p\id over the odds....not bothered about missing out on this one .Ward or another similar quality left back is the the one that is imperative

Not forgetting they also have completed the loan of Kenneth Omeruo from Chelsea with Patrick Bamford also rumoured to be going on loan.
Manager was formally Morinho's assistant so good contacts in the game.
If Clayton deal is up to £3m then that will be based on promotion so will be peanuts at that time.
They also have an asset they know they can sell on if need be.
There losses of £14m last year matched ours but no doubt included spending they did before FFP penalties exist.
