The composition of the breakaways is going to be interesting, from now on.
A fair few teams will be looking to get GC help up the roads.

Call himself a pro.
I could beat Tony Martin up this climb :dunce:

I'm going to have a shot every time they mention an American rider for no apparent reason.
I'm smashed and I've been watching Eurosport most of the afternoon, only turning over as Nibs crossed the line.

how many riders will crash, before they stop the tour?

Henri Desgrange (the inventor of the Tour de France) originally said it would be a success if only 1 rider finished the race leaving everyone else unable to complete it.

Gotta problem now.
I've been vegged out on the sofa for so long, I now can't get motivated to go out for a spin.

Exactly how far did Bert ride with this minor ailment?

Broken tibia! Nails!

Can't believe it's the first time he's climbed off in 8 years.

Some talk of him taking a few too many risks though.

On a more concerning note, estimates put nibali at 6.2-6.5w/kg for the final climb!

What was Riis up to? While the doctor was bandaging Contador's knee he whipped the rain jacket out of Contador's back pocket, hid it behind his back and then slipped it in his pocket. Or so it looked on the highlights.

Stone a crows! Is there anything that stage didn't have!? All I can think of is a bunch sprint, but we did have Purito and Tommy V doing a two man version for every KoM point. We even get a no handed wheelie from Sagan as he crosses the finishing line and our guaranteed G hitting the deck moment  Difficult to know where to start here.

Loving the way OPQS have gone for this race since Cav crashed out. Tony Martin was absolutely immense today for Kwiatkowski, especially given what he did yesterday. Just a shame the young Pole couldn't quite hang in there to make the most of it.

Would have liked to see Purito hang on for the stage win today. KoM is all but over now though I expect.

Gutted for Contador, and also for Nibs in a roundabout way. We're never going to know now just how decisive that brilliant ride on the cobbles of stage 5 was or could have been. As others have said, Nibs stays upright he wins this Tour now, simple as that.

On the plus side we do now have the most open GC behind Nibs that it's possible to get. So many if buts and maybes and it's going to be serious chess on wheels. I'd love to see Pinot and Bardet round out the podium to make it a young man's race like the Giro was, but that's going to be a very big ask for the French with experienced heads like Valverde and Porte in there.

The double plus is the new Vuelta line up already mentioned. That is quite simply mouthwatering.

Phew!, what a Tour so far! Never mind the riders, I think even us fans need a rest day from this one just to get our breath back.

Can't see Contador making the Vuelta with a broken leg...

Visconti made this Tour from a broken Fibia in the Giro I think. Not sure of the relative time scales without working it out and what;s the difference in recovery time between broken fibula and tibia.

Edit: My mistake. Just remembered it was the Tour Down Under where he broke it, not the Giro. Just checked the time scales...Broke it in January, was back to proper racing in April.

Yeah, only 6 weeks to the Vuelta so no chance.

Tibia is a much bigger deal then fibula, you can function perfectly well without most of the latter.

Thanks. Doesn't look good for him making it does it. I think we all instantly rushed to conclude he'd be there and make it a dream GC startlist.

This is an interesting reader comment on the CN story:

If it's a stress fracture on your tibia it may feel like a strain on your knee. Happened to my bro, fortunately he got x-rays after walking around on it for weeks thinking it was tendonitis! Still really, really hurt. I'm guessing Alberto's was also a fracture on the lower tibia given his crash

Still takes nothing away from the fact that pro cyclists are just mental in terms of their willingness to try and get back on the bike. Which reminds me...chapeau to Machado today for getting back on and finishing the stage

Yes, there are a whole host of possible injuries.

The very mechanism of Contador's injury means it isn't a stress fracture (from repeated use). Most likely a fracture at the top end (tibial plateau) which can result from excessive twisting forces as well as impact. Some of these require surgery as, I think, they've said contador is having. Any fracture lower down, he wouldn't be able to weight bear at all and anything needing surgery would have quite an obvious deformity.

I'm listening to all your comments intently because of your cycling background and thinking you'd know your stuff regarding injuries. Then I just remembered again what you now do for a living as well :dunce: Thanks for the feedback.

I know you've only initial reports to go on, but best case scenario on location of a fractured Tibia, when's the soonest he's likely to be back you reckon? Season pretty much over or Lombardy at the beginning of October a possible? The Worlds at the end is September is a flat parcours anyway I think?
