That's a good start then; you're likely to get the swimming speed and endurance back very quickly. I'd never done any competitive swimming so had to learn proper front crawl tekkers before my first triathlon 3 years ago. I'm still fairly crap at it, but training in a group at my local gym/pool helps, and I now manage a sub 15 min 750m without making myself too knackered.

Cycle to run is a killer transition. However, you'll find that you can run the worst of the lead legs feeling out in about 1K. Practising a short run after a hard bike session will get you used to this feeling!

@strings I would agree with the this, cycle to run and concur with practicing the short run after hard bike. I would also say I had loads of problems with the first two mins from swim to cycle. I felt totally disorientated. Every time i left the pool I would try and simulate (as best as possible) a speedy exit into transition (changing room) Good luck, the sprint is so much fun.

Did you get whistled at by one of the attendants, who pointed towards the "NO RUNNING" sign? :D

Swim to cycle is a bit of an odd one, because the distance from the water – whether it be in the pool or outdoors – to transition seems to vary massively. One tri I did last year took about five minutes to get to from the water - not easy when you've nothing on your feet and big stones on the path ahead. Add in the challenge of getting a wetsuit off at the same time, and it means a lot of practice is needed all round...

Signed up for my first full marathon, to take place March 2nd next year. Done a few halves and a sprinkling of 10kms, but this is the big one. Longest run so far has been 26km, so going to build up to 40km over the next eight weeks. Should be a GIGGLE. :)

Happy new year, fellow runners. Hope 2014 is a good and injury-free. Kicked the year off with 18 miles to Brighton Marina and back. Home before the heavens opened, thank goodness.

Happy running.

How do you keep track of your mile split times? Would love to be able to analyse my splits on longer runs.

I have a Garmin GPS watch, you can do all sorts of analysis afterwards!!!

Essex boy then?

Only an easy 5 for me yesterday and again today. Brighton Marathon here I come. Always feel good at the beginning of the training plan before the accumulated miles take their toll.

When I saw p&D I wondered what it was. A quick google and it's the book and plan I used last year. I did the 55 mile max plan. No problems until March when out injured for the whole month after walking in the Brecon Beacons, after watching Brighton win 2-0 at Cardiff. I chose it because I liked the emphasis on 3 long runs at 20 miles. Despite the injury I was able to finish the marathon 30 minutes slower than planned. I think the training plan helped me to the finish line.

This year I am changing the programme and going for the Hanson method. Less emphasis on long, long runs and more on tempo, speed and strength workouts. More fun whatever the outcome. For SDW50 the P&D should be better. Where will you do the hill running rand the estuary?

For my Hill training I'll be doing Punchbowl Marathon & Steyning Stinger Marathon as part of my build up.
I also use the back roads between Maldon & Chelmsford which are runnable hills.

Ran the Ely 10k on Tuesday in horrendous conditions, winds of 50mph didn't stop 560 runners turning out, ran it in 41.12 and 63rd place. It was like wadding through treacle In places! Ready for the year ahead!

Speed session for me later. Following the #asics262 sub 3.30 marathon training schedule which has me down for 1m jog and then 5 x 1000M at 10k pace with 400m recoveries and then 1M jog.

Then homemade chicken pie for afters.

I got a Garmin off of the missis for my birthday this weekend, which will be having its first outing tonight. Probably be doing 6 miles with 4 reps of 1 mile at sub 6 mins followed by 0.5 miles easy.
