Being a casual

Question is though were they casuals in the proper sense of the word and part of a firm or just wannabes who happened to copy the style? Back then we all wore the casual look. I did and I certainly wasn't part of a firm. My mate and I got into a bit of trouble at Ipswich away in 91 by some blokes in casual gear. I seriously doubt they were part of a firm. Likewise, I had a bit of verbals with a few Millwall fans a season or two back at the Amex. The way they were behaving towards the Brighton fans it was obvious they were just coked-up wannabes.
I agree though, I've erroneously drunk in pubs I really shouldn't have gone into on matchday and each time we've either taken the hint and left of our own volition or someone's come up to us and pointed out our mistake. My mates and I could have been slapped around each time but the unwritten rule that firms only attack other firms has applied each time.
And that's not romanticising them. The reason they don't do it is because there's no kudos for the firms involved and everyone knows that. There's always a few bad apples but they get sorted out soon enough. A few seasons back at Swindon a few of their fans were making the most offensive homophobic comments to me and me then 9 year old son because I was holding his hand as we walked to the station after the match (my son had his Albion shirt on). Things got a bit heated and there was no way I was going to wade in if I had my son with me. The situation was soon resolved when another Swindon fan came from nowhere and belted the gobbiest of the group. He apologised to me and told the group to eff off. I honestly think that this self-regulation would be identical across most clubs in Britain.

In the case of the Scunthorpe lot, if memory serves me right (and it was over 20 years ago) they were a mixture of casuals and what we'd now call chavs. It was funny though. At the time I went home and away with the same group, a few of us well dressed and a few of us very much not. People soon worked out we were harmless alcoholics and left us alone. I had two run ins my whole time, the Scunthorpe one mentioned and a time after the multiple penalty Palace game that seemed to involve everyone in the road by default. Some of my mates got some bother in a pub in Chesterfield when I didn't go and that was it. We had an informal 'no colours' rule because you'd get bother in places like Cardiff and Birmingham if you were easily identifiable but one of our number broke that on a number of occasions
But the main point is, as you say, we didn't go looking for trouble and therefore didn't find any. We did drink a lot of beer though.

Well said young man....never understood the fascination with this. What's the problem with going to watch the football and - shock horror - going just to enjoy the game, as opposed to being a lairy faux geezaaahhGrow the **** up, we support Brighton, it ain't Green St.
I watched Green St, last Wednesday for the second time,seen most of them...Football Factory,thankfully there is,apart from a few brain dead idiots, not much of it around now,at least kids can go to matches without being worried about being caught up with the casuals.

Another one missing the point, Green St is crap fair enough, but the casual thing was and still is about the CLOTHES for some of us, the casual thing first came out when I was in my last year at school so I grew up with it, I take my kids to the match and don't go around kicking the crap out of people but like casual clothes.

So you have never watched a film twice...it is a film ...you know...acting..I've seen the original Brighton Rock many times as I was at the filming on the racecourse...I've seen 'Singing in the Rain' lots of times...that doesn't mean I like dancing down the street in the rain...
Yes I have watched some films loads of times but you have missed the point AGAIN.
You watch a crap film about football violence TWICE then post about brain dead idiots, my point is you must of enjoyed something about it to watch it again.
