The title says it all really let the debate begin . The green party wanna charge you £20 to park for a few hours in madera drive if you own a car & wanna take your family out for the day , but if your an Irish gipsy you can stick your caravan any where in Brighton for a few months & dump all your shit for free .

Parked in Madeira Drive last Sunday and was totally shocked by the £3.50 being asked for the hour. Taking the piss immediately sprang to mind but decided to cough up as family wanted to have some time at the cafe by the beach volleyball. Do we want tourists / visitors? This is merely going to force much needed tourist revenue somewhere else.

Don't get me going on travellers. I hate them intensely and what I could write about them could well land me in a court of law!

Park in the Marina for free and walk or even better, with the kids, get the Volks railways along in to town.

I don't see the issue if you've got a full car on people anyway, it's hardly a LOT of money.

I have a feeling that the free Marina parking will eventually go Pay & Display if they see that people are using it without using the facilities in The Marina.

If you're going to start a debate, do it on the back of some truth, rather than a bare-faced lie.

Not very practical if you have loads of stuff to carry or want to be able to return to the car during the day. Frankly £20 is taking the piss and shows the Greens don't really appreciate that we're a tourist town. Then what would we expect of a party that decides to elect a complete idiot like Kitkat as their leader ?

Presumably this £20 figure has been pulled out of thin air, anyway to provoke a reaction. £3.00 an hour for those premium spaces right on Madeira is fair enough, if people are daft enough to pay them. As long as there are more reasonable places to park, for those who want longer than a couple of hours. You can park in London Road all day for about £5, and walk to the seafront in about 15 minutes. Anyone who leaves their car on Madeira all day because they are too lazy to walk deserves to pay through the nose for the privelage.

You can park in Churchill Square for £6 for upto 4 hours. That sounds pretty good.

Have you tried parking in Madiera Drive, not paying for a ticket and claiming you're a Gyspy? According to you you'd be let off the fine wouldn't you?

Was about to suggest the same.

Or they realise that roughly 80% of tourists that visit Brighton arrive by train. Anyone who drives down, frankly, should have to wear an "I Am A C**t" T-shirt for the entire visit, should have to pay £10 to every local resident they encounter who demands 'tourist tax', whilst a specially trained group of seagulls* spend the entire time they are parked up shitting on the roof and bonnet of their car.

*actual seagulls, although if Albion fans fancy it, maybe as special treat for 4x4s, fair enough.

I think you'd have to prove that you were a tinker,a three legged staffie and a Van load of stolen railway cable should suffice, you could make sure that you'd persuaded the authorities by stopping off at the Royal Sussex and shitting on the toilet floor.

And therein lies the rather blinkered attitude. Firstly where on earth do you get the 80% figure from ?

Whether you, or the Greens, like it or not we get A LOT of tourists driving into the city. Some will do it because they are lazy, others because the weekend trains services are dire ( especially if you want late night trains ) and others because it's impractical to traipse down Queens Road with three young children, the toys, the picnic and the spare clothes. If these people aren't catered for then they will go elsewhere no matter the amount of preaching about taking public transport they are given. Once they go elsewhere ( and they will ) it will be close to impossible to get them back.

Both Worthing and Eastbourne have considerably cheaper parking and will benefit from the stupidly high prices in Brighton and Hove. Of course, in three years time, when there are businesses closing across the city due to the drop in tourists, the Greens will be moaning about lack of income from business taxes and so will try and increase council tax to cover the shortfall. The Greens fail completely to understand the local economy and when they elect a complete twat like Kitkat as leader one can only hope their reign is short lived.

You want to spend the day in Churchill Square and it will cost you £25 ! If a family quite reasonably got there for 10am, did a bit of shopping, had a spot of lunch, spent the afternoon on the beach and then had dinner before leaving then £25 is easy to reach - and it would be a rip off but the only reason Churchill Square get away with charging it is because the council spaces are so expensive as well.
