For me everyone is starting on the lets slate CMS bandwagon and it's very dull, we should be looking at a certain Mr Poyet over this. He bought him for what was a record transfer fee for us, promised him the world, plays him on the left....drops him back or doesnt give him any strike partner to build a partnership/understanding with and has also let him rot on the bench for half the season.

What are people expecting when we are launching 50 yard high balls up field from the back & he's stuck up top alone, he stands no chance as championship defenders dont make the same errors that league one players do, they are bigger and stronger and CMS just doesnt get either enough knock downs from a srtiking partner or enough balls to feet in the area.

CMS has built his career on latching onto through balls, we barely ever put any through to him so what the fcuk are people expecting?

Poyet signed him as the jewel in the crown and CMS must look on in disbelief that A.Barnes can play every week, a guy that when Poyet goes onto another club will drift down into league one where he belongs. It looks to me that he is asking too much of CMS to be able to get a shed load of goals in this team playing the way we play & thats Poyet's biggest mistake since he joined the club, the only saving grace is we should be able to recoup moreor less what we paid in my opinion.

Dont get me wrong he was poor lastnight and just wasnt in the game but he makes 101 good runs and they are missed every fcuking time, it's like it's ignored and then sideways we go again, lastnight was an incredibly frustrating game, dont think it's fair to pinpoint CMS as the issue lastnight, we need a strike partner that he can play with, a good one too....not Sam Bloody Vokes, then we will see a return of the 2 million we spent!

How about his 1st touch? It's not good enough often enough sadly. I have no wish to jump on a CMS knocking bandwagon, but he is not the striker we need for the way we play so I'll agree that it seems Poyet signed the wrong player.

Its worth remembering that a decent striker should be able to have an all round game, especially when you pay 3M or so. Each and every decent striker should be able to hold the ball up well enough, bring others into play and be half decent at finishing. To say that CMS's game is just limited to latching on to through balls is nonsense.

I personally was quite excited at the prospect of having him here at the start of the season, but now i have witnessed his all round game for a year, im thinking that even if he did have a strike partner it wouldnt improve him TBH. Whilst his effort is unquestionable, his close control is pretty poor and his finishing isnt great at all. For that money i would have expected his ALL ROUND game to be of a higher quality.

CMS was poor last night - first touch diabolical, also there were several great crosses in dangerous areas and he was no where near them. Great opportunity to score from 8 yards out for the second time in a week and he scuffed his shot. Not good enough for me whatever the system and especially for the price tag be that 2.5 or 3.5 million. Shame as he clearly tries hard and seems like a nice bloke.

Have to agree. He obviously didn't choose how much he cost, but a £3m striker should have a GOOD first touch as an absolute minimum.

Compare CMS' first touch to Murray's. MILES apart.

I agree. I like Vokes, he holds the ball up well. We just need to make sure we capitalise on this ability. If it must be a lone striker, we need midfielders breaking forward at pace to support him. I am no "statto" and have not checked, but how many goals has our midfield scored from open play?

As I said to a mate of mine last night, Gus is a new manager still, Charlie only had a brief stint as assistant manager at Havant&Waterlooville and Taricco also has no previous managerial before this job either. It's an inexperienced management team that will make mistakes, both in transfers and team selections. That really has to be expected.

As for last night, we were playing a Reading side bang in form and with one of the best defences in the league. As a striker you are only going to get a couple of chances. CMS turns when he should square up and lay it off, he lays it off when he should turn and run at the defence, and he just doesn't seem to make the runs you talk of at the right time. I actually thought, 2nd half especially we did play some through balls, did get behind their defence, but CMS just wasn't on the end of anything.

So, are you suggesting we change the way we play for one player, or accept that the player isn't fitting to the way we play and look for an alternative? I honestly think a striker for next season is undoubtedly a priority. CMS will hopefully stay and still have a contribution to make, but with a centre forward that really fits into our system, I think we'll be there or there abouts next season.

I agree but who exactly is he bringing into play? He has to hold the ball up, lay it off and then get onto the through ball that he's just laid off...it's asking too much and that for me is why we dont score enough goals and wont do playing this system.

He doesnt become a bad player overnight, but for me were expecting too much for any striker to be prolific playing the way we do.

This without doubt! I persoanlly think that Barnes should play up top instead of CMS and vokes, not in midfield.

Are you for real mate? Ashley barnes could score 30+ in League one could he?

I agree CMS touch has been off but people are looking at the wrong person to blaim to be honest & as for your final comment, thats about all vokes can do, another journeyman loan player who no-one wants to keep and not the answer.

I think the best pairing is Vokes holding up the ball and Barnes playing just in behind to feed off the balls Vokes wins. But Barnes playing as a striker and not in midfield!

In regards to those who are saying Barnes is a better finisher, you must be joking me, ashley barnes who has about 10 shots per game with most of them going high and wide, is that the same Ashley Barnes? One thing Ashley does do is get involved and movement wise he is better, but as finisher no chance otherwise Reading, Leicester and West Ham would have wanted Barnes and that aint ever happening.

Exactly! nobody. His first touch has let him down so many times ive lost count.

Im not saying hes a bad player, im saying he isnt good enough for this league in a promotion chasing side.

Yes, give Barnes a couple of years to work on his overall game and I think he could score 30+ in league one with the right service.

Agree that barnes should be playing as a forward but then if you play 2 up front you have to lose 1 in midfield. Gus loves to pack the midfield because he doesnt like to give the oppo the chance to dominate us through the middle. Unless you have a player who can do the job of the 2 defensive midfielders we currently employ than you will only ever see 1 up front.

I don't want to get into the way we play debate again on this thread. However, you talk about him not becoming a overnight. My question is, based upon his record with Posh at this level last time, is has he ever been good enough to play against Championship quality defenders? He was like he is for us when he player against us for Posh last year - was that because of our quality of defenders last year?
