He's quite right. As much as the competition is not a priority, to come out and say it should be scrapped the day before a game is disrespectful in the extreme. It's OK for him to say having played at the top level but third division footballers may see it differently.

That's without taking into account all the fans that bought tickets for the game. I don't usually disagree with Poyet but I think his comments about the JPT were wrong.

Greg Abbott today hit out at Brighton boss Gus Poyet over the Seagulls chief’s controversial comments about the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy, accusing his rival manager of “demeaning” the competition.

As it was revealed Carlisle United will start their campaign to reach Wembley with a home tie against Port Vale, manager Abbott took Uruguayan Poyet to task.

The Brighton manager last week claimed the JPT – which earned Carlisle crucial revenue last term – was irrelevant and should be scrapped.

Abbott, whose side went second in League One after Saturday’s goalless draw with Swindon, said Poyet was wrong to dismiss the value of the lower leagues’ cup competition.

“I am disappointed with Gus’s comments,” said Abbott. “He is in England and it is part of the English game.

“How can he make a statement like that when Brighton have had no money and have been in financial trouble in the past?

“The JPT is a great chance for him, as manager of one of the strongest teams in the competition, to get to Wembley and make half a million quid.

“So why demean the competition? It’s about time we started looking after our cups in England.”

Poyet last week described the JPT as “not necessary”, adding: “Does it give you the possibility of going up? No. The possibility of getting into Europe? No. The possibility of buying a top striker? No. It's just a trip to Wembley.” The Seagulls were knocked out of the competition by Leyton Orient the following day.

United, meanwhile, were paired with League Two outfit Vale in the second round of the northern section (west) and will host the Valiants on Tuesday, October 5 as they try to go one better than last season, when they were losing finalists to Southampton in front of 73,476 fans at the national stadium.

Couldn't care less what Abbott thinks. Poyet knows the score, the competition is an unnecessary distraction, that I am pleased we are out of.

The FA Cup and to an extent, Carling Cup, fair enough, it means something and gives us a chance for a big tie. Other that it's only the league that matters.

I absolutely agree with this.

Like you say realistically its the only chance that most lover division players will have to turn out at Wemberley.

That and people paid to see it.

What POOyet should have said is *I will use my full squad for this game where possible*

Meaning that we know he isnt taking it too seriously.

Who the f*** is Greg Abbot ? Apart from some perrennial lower league no-mark getting a few headlines off the back of Gus's name.

Gus was spot on anyway. His remarks were perhaps badly timed, but he certainly wasn't wrong.

But it is a crap competition, i`ll go to the home ties but i always hope we get drawn away. We should have had a day out at Wembley a couple of years ago but blew it when it was on a bloody plate for us.
Waste of time and glad we are out.

The Carlisle manager does have a bit of a point though.

That's fair enough - Gus is free to disregard the competition FOR US as much as he likes, if he thinks it will hinder our league season. And by doing so maybe it does give clubs to whom a Wembley final would make a big difference financially more chance of getting to the final. But he doesn't really have any right to call for it to be scrapped. As muhc as people do it down on here, when was the last time we played at Wembley? A lot of fans have never seen it, I haven't, I went to Cardiff and I'd love to see that kind of thing again even if it is in the JPT.

We'd only make any money if we got to Wembley - we actually LOSE money staging the games in the earlier rounds because of the small crowds, cheap ticket prices and cost of staging games at Withdean.

I agree. His stance of the JPT had clearly got through to the team as well, as I'm sure anyone who witnessed the game will agree. Over 2000 people had paid good money to see the game.

You only had to look at the two dugouts to see that, the usually animated Poyet remained seated the whole game whilst Salde on the other bench was stood up screaming and shouting.
