It does not work.
ERs are legally obligated to stabilise an uninsured patient, and then if necessary move the patient to a County {welfare} hospital.
See Michael Moore's "Sickp"
In florida a couple of years ago I had a severe cold.As I have a few other health issues I was concerned about pneumonia.
I am a Chrysler retieree with excellent out of Country insurance.
Was in ER for just under 2 hours for X Ray and blood work. Insrance pai the Hospital directly, $1200. Anurse said to me, "You are the kind of patient we like"!!!!

And would they ever, and would we as a nation find it acceptable for foreign nationals to be left dying in waiting rooms ?

We probably have to accept that our system being free at the point of delivery will always be open to that.

.. but Billions? unlikely.
of course not, but the abuse amounts to people turning up here with pre existing conditions that need treatment, they receive treatment then skip the country owing the money for the said treatment.

Im am really sickened by people like you in this country. I pay taxes that despite being on a pretty low income I am happy to pay because I really do believe in helping people less fortunate than myself despite not being in a great position myself. I would like to ask like many on this forum where your claim of "billions" of pounds per year treating foreigners who are apparantly scaming us out of our taxes comes from!

Maybe the tens of thousand's, possibly hundred's of thousands (or maybe by your standards of exaggeration billions) of people that are (using BNP language) indigenous british citizen's that scam their way out of work, taxes etc every year are more of a problem to this country than a few thousand immigrants that are desperate, poverty stricken and have no other option?

Oh yeah and In my experiance working in a venue that hosts a number of American bands I have had many conversations with band members who are in disbelief that we can just roll up to the hospital and get treatment without getting out the credit card/phone the insurance company. Yeah we have to wait a while sometimes but when immediate care is needed (something that has happened to me twice in my life) people are rushed into casualty IMMEDIATELY without hesitation. Sure we have problems but who doesn't!

Also, I would be personally happy that my taxes get spent on treating people that have life threatening diseases wherever they come from. Whilst we shouldn't make this country a one-stop-shop for people to get treatment and then leave, surely you have some human compassion for people less fortunate than yourself?!?! Or is it simply that you don't like anyone that isn't white? I know this won't make any difference to your viewpoint and depite the fact that I rarely make posts on this forum and prefer to read other's messages I could not prevent myself from replying to your comments.

Hope you are well
Just glad that money is so plentiful in the NHS that we can afford to pay for foreigners without people who've paid all their lives suffereing

Watching the US debate, and listening to ranters like Rush Limbaugh, what really annoyed me was that when the Canadian system was mentioned, they used extreme examples to knock it. In any system you can find horror stories and extreme examples, but that doesn't mean a system is generally not a good thing. I find the Canadian system a nice compromise between the UK and the US.

I remember a segment on the daily show where they showed a clip from Glenn Beck's old show in which he criticised the american health care system for it's inherent failing, poor service, lack of compassion, high prices and the greedy insurance companies.

They followed it up with a clip from his current show on fox where he proclaimed the americna health system to be the best in the world, and it shouldn't be socialised by Obama.

I was in the US in September at a conference of small business advisors and this is a topic which is really polarising opinion.
I believe that one of the Obama proposals involved requiring the majority of small businesses to contribute to the healthcare provision costs of their employees.
Republican supporters presented this another burden on businesses and the more hysterical ones saw it as a step on the road to communism. Others pointed out that small businesses who cannot afford to offer an insurance package have the burden of staff who are ill but won't seek treatment and often end up paying for their employees to be treated, causing them financial difficulty.

Personally, I don't really see how anybody can call a situation in which 60 million people are an accident or illness away from bankrupcy or destitution as anything other than barbaric in a country as wealthy as the US.

The problem with America is that it's Me, Me, Me attitude breeds massive selfishness. Americans are only interested in number one and just about no 'good deed' done by Americans or America is without some sort of agenda, Iraq was about oil and not toppling a dictator, a fact now been shown up graphically in Haiti for all the wrong reasons. If they had saved some gas and invaded their maybe their would not be quite such chaos and tragedy as there is now. Still, sod the Haitians what have they got that the US would want ? The fact that so many AMericans see 'Socilism' as some kind of heinous crime speaks for itself.

Their health system is typical, America is great if you have health and wealth but if you lack one or the other (and so often they are related) it's a Third World Country. They would not have the largest prison population per capita in the World if they paid more tax to have a better Welfare system. Instead those who can afford it live behind high walls and gates with armed guards on patrol. It's just tough shit if you are poor in America.

All hospitals and doctors are terrified of being sued so they tend to recommend additional tests, MRI scans etc which a British quack would probably not bother with.

The bit about being sued maybe true but American doctors/hospitals will run any test that they can get away with so as to claim more money from the insurance company. The same happens in all foreign countries when they find out you have valid insurance because they can get more money that way. Sure the same thing happens here to foreign nationals with insurance as well though.

Weird these shit-for-brains Republicans; like many self-proclaimed patriots, their 'love' of their country seems to belie a hatred of many of their poorer countrymen and women: 'God Bless America and its people, but f*** the 60 million of our fellow citizens who can't afford health insurance -let 'em go bankrupt of die'!

Oh, and we believe in freedom of speech, but if you question anything we believe, we'll denounce you as 'a Goddam Commie pinko faggot'.

Oooh, aren't they lovely rational people!

One of those articles is from 2003, before they clamped down on immigrants using the NHS. Anything more recent on the costs of foreigners using the NHS?

Agree with you on the AIDS thing. They should just be clear about where the increase has come from

Presumably those objecting to foreigners receiving health care here would also be willing to foot the bill for emergency treatment entirely themselves should they be injured in a car accident while on holiday in France: after all, why should the French taxpayers stand for it?

And what about the thousands of ageing Brits retiring to the Costa del Sol and then falling ill with common geriatric complaints. Do the Spanish tell them to piss off back to the UK for hospital treatment? I suspect not (though, rather like Helter Skelter, I have absolutely no statistics upon which to base this argument. But it doesn't seem to matter).

GlaxoSmithklineBeecham. End of. Most abhorrant company in the world. The reason the USA and many other nations are f***ed. They should be disolved and prosecuted.
