Okay Yorkie - if we're gonna split hairs - The processioners et al who seem to have a problem with outsiders.

I haven't read that anywhere. It seems to be Jevs who was telling everyone to keep out.

I'm certainly NOT a parochial, elitist Lewesian. I don't even live there. Neither do I consider Bonfire Night a "private party". But I do think that the event isn't improved when the town is so full that there's little chance that the spectators can enjoy it. If that makes me a NIMBY in your eyes then there's little I can do to change your mind. But it doesn't stop me taking particular offense at being compared with some of the real NIMBYs we've fought against.

No you're quite right, Yorkie. Allcomers a re always welcome according to this thread.

oh, hang on...

We do not want people to come to Lewes on the 5th because Lewes is only a small market town with narrow streets, large crowds impact on the processions, which have to try to pass down the streets through the crowds. This often means that there are areas where there are too many people who end up standing in the road, which can lead to problems, especially if an emergency vehicle then has to pass through the procession which can't really move out the way because of the crowd. The message has always been for people not from Lewes to stay away. Could you imagine how many would turn up if it was advertised and all welcomed. We in the bonfire societies have been in discussions with train companies etc, to try to stop extra trains being put on to limit numbers arriving.

If you want to come to Lewes on the fifth, join a society and join a procession or stay away is my advice

I'll say this very slowly for you nipple!

Having grown up in Lewes and Ringmer and being around the event I know that the rough and ready approach is what makes the event so special.

I now live in Barnham and thought I would take the future Mrs Barnham Seagull and the soon to be in laws to this years event. They thought it was fantastic, the scale of it and the History involved and the banners etc.

I would say this thow, this event is special and people in Lewes should be proud that people want to come and see this, its living History and something that the UK which is dying out. I say long live bonfire but people of Lewes do not be so inward looking. Moaning about trouble makers from outside the town is pathetic when I lived there most of the trouble makers I saw were locals on the lash and to moan about druncks etc well there were quite a few in the procession who were obviosly druck before it started or swigging strongbow or plastic bottles with spirits in.

Oh Fu*k it, everyone come into Lewes, despite it being too small to cope!!! - Lets crush several hundred people to death, just so that a few who don't really get why we don't want a large number of spectators to turn up can understand why they are unwelcome.

It is not down to being snobbish, or being a local event for local people only, but if anyone who heard about it and wanted to just turned up, the town of Lewes, with it's narrow streets, would not cope, and would not be safe for anyone.

Posts have referred to saying that only people from Brighton should be able to shop at Churchill square, and people from Lewes are not welcome, is not displaying a similar attitude to why we don't want people from outside the area to turn up. - The only way it would be is if Churchill square could only cope safely with 100,000 visitors at one time , and because of it's popularity on one day of the year, 2 million turn up at once to shop, and despite people doing their best to ensure that the situation is safe and managable, then have to put up with even more who wanted to turn up at the same time complaining that they are being told that they can't, and it's just because they are just being "very parochial and superior"

If the people of Lewes agree not to attend sell-out Brighton matches, allowing just residents of Brighton and Hove to go and not feel over crowded, then it would be fair not to attend their firework display. Sound fair?

For what it's worth ... the police comment in tonight's Argus was that the event "passed reasonably safely". That's with 60,000 people crammed into what is basically one street.

Last year, there were 80,000 people. It was mayhem.

The safety assessment of Withdean Stadium is that more than 15,000 disgorging on to the surrounding streets is "too dangerous".

Provided that all 8850 in attendance were crammed into the north stand then yes!

Whilst the Bonfire Societies tell people to stay away, the more people will come - its human nature to feel slighted when someone says you can't do something.....ie whasts so special that we can't come along.

If they just kept quite about it, maybe it would be different? Who knows...or if they explained that people should understand what its about, that its not fit for children, its loud, scary, fireworks will be used, and a spot exam on the reason it is in Lewes (history exam) should keep a few people away.... (if not some of the society members!)

Whilst I do understand what you are getting at, I think it is underestimated how much of a boost this night is to the economy of Lewes.

I have to question this comment, there are no shops open after about four o clock, most shops on the various society routes board up their windows (I assume at their own expense) yes the pikies that turn up with their awful bunny ears and light sabres make some money as well as the burger vans and a few fish and chip shops. Yes pubs make some money but I would suggest more from society members.

As for students, which somebody else posted about, it's actually quite funny watching them wander around Lewes aimlessly suddenly springing into action when they hear a band and shrieking with joy when a banger goes off.

Then go and hold it in the middle of nowhere where you and your wanky, cliquey, overgrown babies won't be disturbed by anoyne as unruly as a Brighton resident. You have no idea what you sound like?

lewes bonfire

Being from Brighton but a regular at Lewes Bonfire over the last 10 or so years the worst thing I found on Monday night was the number of people in the queue for the trains back, predominantly people who got off at Falmer, who were discussing the evening, the discussions tended to be along the lines of "whats the point of all those bloody processions, we only wanted to see the fireworks"

Also another moan, whilst at the war memorial earlier in the evening there was an alarming lack of respect for the silences.

Do all visitors that turn up not realise what it is about and the level of noise? Nice generalisation there.

Whilst I do understand what you are getting at, I think it is underestimated how much of a boost this night is to the economy of Lewes.

I still don't understand why the Lewesians are so precious when it comes to visitors - I used to go alot when I was younger, as guests of some Ditchiling folk who used to have a huge meal with a large gathering and never once felt unwelcome. The sort of attitude suggests that they do not need anything outside of Lewes District - Following that sort of logic, why not just stick to watching Lewes play football and all things Lewes District? I always regarded Lewes as my County town, but the sort of attitude shown here puts me off ever wanting to spend any money there - no doubt the heathens would celebrate that fact.

Aside from that, the boss of Festival Fireworks (people some may remember the death of two firefighters) was arrested that night and it can be found on youtube.

Damn it that video is no longer available :(

There are some very angry people on here :(

How can an event, which has certain societies being fairly anti a sect of a religion be allowed in this age of not discriminating?

LOL says the man with 'pikey' in his signature. LOL
