Half of the press this morning, we all know which half, banging on about mob rule and threats to democracy.
And the blue rinses will be clutching their pearls even tighter.

FFS

They have a need to create an “enemy”.
An unseen and insidious threat to our “wonderful” way of life.
Quite a few tinpot regimes - and a few less tinpot - have done this over the decades.
1930’s Germany for one - Putin these days
Textbook speech from Rishi.

This outrageous story was totally covered up in the majority of the media because they all took the Sunk culture war bait. Genius.

This thread is a depressing manifest of the 21st century hate disease that has engulfed us - in fact, a perfect example.
the tories have always been "evil", they have a very long history of spreading hatred, nothing new here

What a funking shock.

But hats off to our very own Lord Henry Gage who managed to get his private drive tarmacadamed through the levelling up scheme before the money ran out! What!

Still breeding past 75, and making sure central government money is redirected to Sussex! Such a role model for us Sussaxons! What!

Bloody good chap! What!

That absolute WEASEL of a man, Michael Gove, is taking questions in the Commons later. He usually manages to obfuscate his way out of these things so it will be interesting to see how he does today.

Disagree with a fair old chunk of those reports, but there is clearly an issue currently, MPs, both Labour and Tories are needing extra security, MPs personal offices and houses are being targeted for protests, in some cases they have turned nasty.

We had the speaker come out last week saying he went against protocol due to worries over MPs safety, which meant a change in how something was voted on, this was asked for by Labour.

That's not me agreeing with the Tories and on the more powers they clearly want, but there is more to this than party politics.

Is that the same Angela Raynor that called Conservative voters " Scum "

No, I don’t think it is the same one.

Deliberately inaccurate or genuine mistake, who’s to know?

She called Boris Johnson and his cabinet ;

“homophobic, racist, misogynistic … scum”

And that’s a quote from the link YOU posted.

She didn’t call Tory voters scum.

She said it after the Tory parties misdeeds during Covid were coming to light and referring to Johnson’s language about Muslims, blacks people and women. As well as cutting off school meals for kids who cannot afford to eat.

It’s all there in the article you posted.

And yet he supports the 'mob rule' of tory voting farmer's protests......
Farmers who are protesting are definitely not Tory voting! Like much of the rest of society, voting habits are changing. Farmers may well have been historic Tories (Tories rural/Labour urban etc) but no longer

I should add, there is a world of difference (not often understood) between the large landowners and the ordinary farmers in this country. Many farmers are also tenants and are continually under the cosh of said landowners which include the Church of England, the Crown, National Trust, The Duke of Westminster, historic estates (eg Goodwood, Duke of Norfolk. Cowdray and Leconfield locally) and some of the biggest financial institutions and pension funds.

Far be it for me to stick up for a Tory aristocrat, but that's a bit of a misrepresentation of the facts here...

The road in question is not the private drive to Firle Place for starters. It's fair to say that the road isn't a public road (i.e. looked after by the highways authority or whatever they are called), so strictly speaking it is a private road belonging to the Firle estate.
However, for the road in question, 95%+ of the traffic will be for Charleston Farmhouse and it doesn't serve Firle Place at all (although it does also provide access to a working farm and a few houses). It wouldn't even need to be a properly surfaced road if it wasn't for the 100,000+ visitors to Charleston every year (which don't directly benefit the Firle Estate).

The charity that runs Charleston Farmhouse as a tourist attraction & art festival venue is completely independent from the Firle Estate. I have no inside knowledge of this, but would find it perfectly reasonable if after the Farmhouse was given to the charity, an arrangement whereby the charity is responsible for maintaining the access road was agreed.

The implication in these media reports is that a wealthy aristocrat (Gage) has used levelling up money to get his personal drive resurfaced, when the story is more accurately one of a charity applying for a grant to improve visitor access to their venue (which just happens to be a road on land that is owned by the Firle Estate/Gage).
Maybe the Gage family obtained some favourable tax breaks for donating Charleston to the charity in the first place, but it seems a little harsh to make out that they have now somehow conned some money out of the levelling up fund for their own benefit.

A better question might be why an arts venue (let's face it, aimed mostly at the middle classes) with revenues well over £3m pa, in the wealthy south-east, needs access to the levelling-up fund anyway. Leafy Firle and its surrounds isn't what immediately springs to mind when I think of places that need "levelling-up". No wonder the money ran out.

It's interesting that The Mail (spit) ran with the story (which is over 2 years old) though. It's not their usual type of target at all (more typical is one of the comments below: "I am glad to hear this. I would rather our government spent this money on something that is genuinely a part of our historical heritage, rather than on the new arrivals")

Right, I'm off to scrub myself clean after that :lolol:

The government has lost a second vote in the Lords on the Rwanda bill. Lord Hope’s amendment was passed by a majority of 102. It says the government cannot treat Rwanda as a safe country until the provisions of the UK-Rwanda treaty have been implemented.

Just when you think they have sunk as low as possible

Lords tell Sunak: Don’t send Afghan heroes to Rwanda

Two former chiefs of the defence staff, a former defence secretary and a former British ambassador to the US, are among members who want to add an exemption to the Rwanda bill to stop those who have worked alongside the UK forces and arrive in Britain via unsafe and illegal routes from being sent to the African country.

They include former members of the Afghan special forces units, known as The Triples, who fought alongside and were paid and trained by the UK special forces. One former senior British diplomat said it “beggared belief” that these soldiers, who were forced to flee the Taliban, could face being deported to the east African country after all they had been through.

Some good news for once. Murdoch's TalkTV is closing its channel and going online only, and Dan Wooton is confirmed as having been sacked from GB news, although that channel is reporting losses of over £76million.

If you are going to to try to discredit MP’s, do try and get your facts right. Especially if you’re using them to back up your argument!
Probably a good idea to spell their name correctly, too :dunce:
