The silence is deafening from certain disaster capitalists in our ruling party, a blue print for future!!!
And other supposed Union members on here who clearly see their membership as means to an end rather than a means for the many.

Perhaps somebody should tip off their Union about that and their other views.

I'd imagined they'd be appalled.

If this is allowed to happen and P&O get away with it then what is the point of unions?

I will be adding P&O to my personal blacklist of businesses, alongside Wetherspoons and all Russian vodka.

As the P&O ferries are registered in Cyprus, the question has to be asked, why are the EU allowing this slave labour? Is there not a minimum wage in the EU?

What I didn't know until this morning on R4 is that P&O have been given taxpayer £s to set up 2 freeports (onshore tax havens much used for smuggling ) which has been Rishi Sunak's 'thing' since he was fresh out of University. I'm not holding my breath waiting for them to break the contract.

Aside of who runs them I remain far from convinced if they are in the national interest.

Those of us who thought the redundancies were illegal didn't realise that Grayling cleared the way in 2018 for this to happen.

A change in the law signed off by former Conservative minister Chris Grayling cleared the way for P&O Ferries to legally sack 800 staff last week without telling the government, a leading maritime lawyer has told Sky News.

Legislation to protect employees in the UK was amended by Mr Grayling in 2018 so that the secretary of state does not have to be notified of mass redundancies on ships registered overseas.

It’s almost as if each country has the sovereignty to decide for themselves even whilst in the EU.

Johnson has just claimed on PMQT that had we been in the EU we would have had no power to stop the P&O sackings.

What chutzpa.

It's a lie, isn't it.

The great British public know what they were voting for and everyone needs to respect the will of the people.

Johnson's reply to criticism of this on PMQT just now was that they are in favour of commerce and jobs, wheras labour is against this.

Johnson and lies go hand in hand. The French & Dutch P&O workers are still in a job.

a change, according to that article, that the unions supported because it increased the protection for seafarers. the flag state needs to be notified, rather than no notification before the amendment. so did P&O notify Cyprus?

it's looking rather acedemic, increasing looks like its legal due to the various international standards, and the crew massive payoffs will discourage any tribunals.

thats the summary view of CIPD (missus is in HR). the law hasnt changed here, the EU and international law hasnt changed. significant change was registration to Cyprus, so UK law no longer applicable. pretty much the same happened with Irish Ferries over a decade ago.
