who was the best striker?

Hard to say. Ward had a regular partner while Zamora never did, and strikers usually do better in pairs. Ward did it at a higher level than Zamora (and holds the goalscoring record) but Zamora´s link up play was better, and he was better with his head. Ward was a better goal poacher. I think Zamora has the better potential, he can go all the way (with the right manager, and I´m not sure that´s Hoddle) while I think that Ward probably reached his right level (maybe a few England caps rather than just one.
Either will do for me, both great players and both very nice guys.

This poll comes up with amazing regularity.

It doesn't mean anything - what should be asked is "If you saw both, who was the better player?" I suspect that Wardy would win that one comfortably, but not taking anything away from Bobby. As Cadiz says, Wardy played with a regular partner and he didn't look the same after Spider had gone.

WILL ALL THOSE PEOPLE WHO NEVER SAW BOTH PLAYERS KINDLY NOT VOTE IN THIS POLL OR PASS AN COMPARATITIVE COMMENT!

I have seen both. Ward was individually more skillful and could run rings around the top defences instinctually. Zamora is more careful and thoughtful perhaps, and apt to distribute the ball to a well-placed team-mate.

Both therefore, are very different from each other, and it is worth imagining what might have been if they both played on the same Albion side (of the late 70's) together. Awesome .

I saw Wardy in his second spell at the albion, he had gone down hill a bit by then, but having said that, the boy was pure class - gets my vote above Bobster.

Having had the good fortune to have seen both, I think Ward just edges it.

I can't really put my finger on why - I just do. If BZ had had a constant partner like Spider though.......

And as for the thought of Ward and BZ together.......excuse me, got to go to the bathroom!!!!!!

Wardy was brilliant at tripping himself up and getting a penalty as Mike Taylor (Ex Ref from Dover) would testify as he nearly always gave us a penalty when in charge of our games. It was said that he was warned of Wardy's ability to get penalties and told to watch out for him.

I think that Wardy was the best for us but didnt do anything at a higher level whereas I think Bobby will go on to be awesome for Spurs and England

did 10 people press the wrong button by mistake, no contest every time PETER WARD the WINNER!

I had the pleasure of seeing Wardy first hand and although Zamo is quality, Ward was a natural dribbler and a had wonderful ability to move either way.
That gives you an opportunity to outnumber your opponents when you've left the last muppet trailning in your wake and gets you free kicks and penalties.
I agree with Shinpad who observes that Zamo is thoughtful and careful with the ball. He can get in behind or drop short to play in the spaces between defence and midfield. As an ex-grunt centre half, he'd be a nightmare to play against 'cos you don't know what he's going to do.
Having said that Wardy could leave you sitting on your fat behind scratching your head.

I once told a fellow Albion fan Wardy was possibly the most naturally gifted player I'd seen (live!) since I saw George Best play.

Wardy for me !

wasn't around when wardy was on the scene but it's so good for people in my generation to see an albion legend whilst the elder fans go on about wardy and how great he was. i can't compare the two therefore but it's been such a privelege to see bobby play i have to vote for him!

Wardy for me. He played when tackles from behind were ok and got the sort of rough treatment that just doesn't happen these days. He would have been even more awesome in the modern game. The only other player that I've seen, outside the Premiership, that compared was Paul Walsh of Charlton(?)

I have seen them both play although I was 9/10/11/12 when Peter Ward graced the Stripes.

All I can say is that any man who can score a hat-trick for England (B Team) is quality.

BZ has the potential.

Therefore the comparison is futile & pointless.

It's like comparing Lineker with Rooney.

I saw both of them play. But, hell, who really was the best?

It's easy to over-sentimentalise the great days of Wardy - never known by the fans as Peter, by the way - and Bobby probably has more potential to go further, in terms of both top-flight and international achievement. He has more evenly distributed all-round ability, more hunger for the ball, a willingness to commit and tackle back, and is a better header of the ball - by far!

Now, if ‘best’ means who had the ability to silence the crowd with anticipation whenever he got the ball; who could mesmerise opponents with his speed on the turn, blistering pace and close control ball skills; who got those old neck-hairs tingling because you just knew you'd been privileged to see genuine, magical genius in action - then Peter Ward has to take the edge overall. I was at Newcastle for the 1979 Div 1 promotion decider and Wardy's goal is still stuck in the memory - and it was acclaimed by the Geordie crowd too. That video is worth a few replays!

Peter Ward was the most awesome, electrifying player I have ever seen in an Albion shirt. And it's great to see he still keeps his Brighton flame burning strongly, from 3,000 miles away.

Quite simply, a man totally deserving of the ultimate accolade: Albion legend.
