Bobby Zamora hit another fabulous late winner for Albion – and kept them four points clear.
The fans’ favourite brought the ball down and unleashed a superb volley in the 82nd minute to grab a 2-1 success over Bristol City at the Amex.
Albion did it the hard way, coming from behind for the second successive home game.
Sam Baldock claimed their equaliser early in the second half although it might have come off a defender last.
The Seagulls were also grateful to two superb saves from David Stockdale and a penalty let-off – all at 1-1.
Derrick Williams appeared beyond the far post to volley home a chipped cross from Jonathan Kodjia in the 17th minute and give City the lead.
By that stage Tomer Hemed had already headed a great chance wide from Leroy Rosenior’s pinpoint cross.
More openings came after City had gone ahead.
Baldock should have scored against his previous club. He sent a shot too close to keeper Frank Fielding after being well set up by Solly March.
When Baldock did get the ball past field, with a lob, Luke Ayling got back to somehow hook the ball clear from beneath his own crossbar.

Hemed was denied by Fielding low down in first-half stoppage time but, again, the keeper should arguably have been left with no chance.Baldock claimed the 53rd-minute leveller at the near post after Bruno played in a low cross at the end of a sweeping move.
But City were the better team in the period after the leveller.
Uwe Huenemeier looked fortunate to get away with a challenge on Luke Freeman in his own box.
Instead referee Iain Williamson booked Freeman for diving.
And Stockdale made two superb saves from Kodija - before Zamora won it in style
