We've had the Jam. What about one of my favourite groups from the same era, The Stranglers. A punk group, but not really since they wrote some great tunes.

My favourites were Peaches and No More Heroes. Leon Trotskey getting an ice pick that made his ears burn is a classic line!

Forget the Sex Pistols and the hype. The Stranglers were the real talent from the punk era. Personally i thought their golden period was up to and including the Raven album. After that they became a little too arty for my liking and they were never going to be the same when later Hugh Cornwell departed. The combo of Burnel's growling bass, Greenfield's (and from Brighton) rippling hammond and Cornwell's sparse Tele work were never bettered.

Too many songs to really rate as a fave but i would suggest:

No More Heroes
Go Buddy Go
Tank
Walk on By (cover)
Peaches
Get a Grip
5 Minutes
Dagenham Dave
London Lady
Princess of The Streets

If you like The Stranglers the biography 'No Mercy' is a great read with genuine tales of mayhem mainly involving rucking with all and sundry and their connection to the Hells Angels.

Who else could come up with a song based on an ageing schoolmistress who dies whilst experiencing her first orgasm, brought on by witnessing pupils copulating on a CCTV camera!

As loved by all Wogan's Radio 2 listeners and all blissfully aware it was all about heroin:D

Come on Attila how about a Stranglers medley for pre-match against Preston?

Alternatively just "Something Better Change" would seem appropriate on current form!

Walk On By for me.

I saw them in 1982 at the Brighton Centre. A technically good performance but Cornwall didn't speak to the audience one except to say hello and at the end to say goodbye.

First band I ever saw. Great gig on Hastings Pier, supported by the Dictators. Was it 1977 or 1978? Anyone else there?

For me, it is both the first albums, Walk on By, Go Buddy Go and Five Minutes.

If I'm not mistaken, the current lead singer of the Stranglers was once the lead singer for Sniff and the Tears (not a Yank band).

Yep, I remember seeing the Stranglers on Hastings pier in early 1977. The support band were "Eater", so maybe they played Hastings later too. After being gobbed on throughout the gig, Hugh Cornwell threatened to walk off unless the "f****** wankers f***** off and jumped of the end of the pier!". It was around the time their first album was released and they were at their raw best.
The Stranglers topped the bill yesterday (Sunday) at the Beautiful days festival at Escot in Devon. Anyone get to see them?

Dunno, maybe Eater were there too. I cannot forget the Dictators, who came on stage and announced "We are the Dictators from New York City - and we are going to rule the world!" Greeted, naturally, with much derision by the locals. Not a bad band really though. Their version of "Search and Destroy" is a classic.
