Hi all,

I currently meditate daily and definately feel the benefits from doing this, My Meditation teacher says I should take up Yoga but as a typical bloke I have fears about Yoga (Thinking it's only for women and men who like other men) but looking on the net that appears to not be the case.

There appear to be 1001 benefits of doing it, does anyone have any advice or expiereinces of doing Yoga?

Cheers

I have practised it for over 20 years. Originally because of a dodgy back. Wouldn't be without it now. If it kept Ryan Giggs playing 1st class football for as long as it has it can't be bad!

I do it occasionaly, or whenever my work allows me, it's very good if u run! My teacher says she finds a lot of marathon runners do it
I don't see anything wrong with it to be fair, I'm 23 and sometimes there are people in the class who are at least 60 more flexible than me!
It's amazing for the mind and body!

My doctor recommended I give it a go as I have a bit of a spazzy back so on a recent holiday I took the opportunity to attend a class. There were several other men in the class and nobody really looked out of place. The thing I found irritating however was the manner of the instructor speaking all slow and soft as she instructed us to breathe in and out etc. then not feel self conscious when the moves she was making us do inevitably caused us to pass wind. It just felt all new age and hippyish which bugged me.

My back was in agony for the following two days so I've not been back

I do pilates three times a week ( for my back) and although its bloody hard work, I enjoy it. I tried yoga and couldn't get on with it ( maybe because the teacher was an annoying so and so).

Anyone who thinks pilates is sissy wants to have a go at layiong on your back, curling your head and shoulders up, touching your knees with your arms whist having your legs at 45 degrees in "table top" followed by the "hundreds" last night my stomach muscles felt on fire!!!

My daughter and I are planning to start yoga classes. It's 2012 and still people are making gender assumptions about yoga! :)

I have just started again after a few years lapsed practice and it's great. I do Ashtanga/flow and it strengthens all core muscle groups pretty quickly. A good drop in class in Brighton is at the Buddha centre (Tichbourne st) everyday between 1 and 2. It's good for beginners and will let you find out what is best for you.

I do yoga as a supplement to other training such as running and fighting (judo-ish type stuff)

It helps as it's low impact, and the stretching especially for your back is amazing. It can be a bit hippyish, but so what? we live in Brighton baby :)

If you're looking for a place to try, I would recommend Yoga Haven. They have a bunch of different styles available.

Btw I dare anybody saying it's soppy/for girls to try the hot yoga class.
