National Service does not have to be forces just something that occupies the 16- 19 age group for 3 years if they do not go to Uni.

Make the entry reqirements for uni harder to meet then get the rest to either join one of the forces or NHS or Fire service etc or do some kind of community work, if they don't fancy any of that free holiday at her Majesty's pleasure.

There definitely is a yob culture in certain quarters, as has been said on other threads. It's just a straight 'consideration for others' thing. Maybe it goes back to Thatcher permeating society with her 'don't give a f*** for anyone else' ideas, which will have left their mark on a lot of 30-40 year-olds (thankfully not all), and maybe their kids. God knows, you could debate that for days.

A large portion of this country are poor,so its unfair to punish them although the only real option is to bring back the cane at schools and let parents hit there kids as dicipline is needed urgently.

Can't believe how fast things have changed in 10 years as the youth of today or should i sat most have serious attitude problems.:smokin: :drink: :drink:

Falmer, soon...
I'd advocate the following

2 hrs a week of "Community Studies" through Schooling should be compulsory between the ages of 8-16

This should involve teaching about society, the way that money works, taxation, the national health, penisions, life insurance, mortgages all sorts of stuff like that which kids have no idea about. It could also involve a community service element, maybe litter patrol, removing grafitti, helping the elderly, planting trees, painting schools, whatever...

Basically getting kids at a young age to have a bit of concern for where they live and the people around them and to prepare them for later life.

Agree with you on this one SM BHA bring back National Service. Anyone see that program last year where they took 30 or so scallys of the street and put them through what National Services was like, it nearly killed them having to get up at the crack of dawn and paint coal, peel potatoes etc etc. But at the end of the program nearly all of there ways of thinking had changed.

The police have just been on to me about the incident when Artois got kicked in following the meet up. Looks like they may be doing something at last.

I agree entirely. Bring back national service, update it a bit by using them as you suggest, such as nurses, fireman, policeman, etc and it'd make this country a whole lot nicer.

I would have had no problem taking a few years out and serving in the forces, or as a fireman, etc...

In the 60's when National Service had finished, any youth (ie 16-21) in court for offences was given the option of Borstal or a spell in the Armed Forces.

Quite a few chose the Armed Forces as I met one or two. The discipline was tough but what made the difference was that in the forces you are forced to get along with your colleagues/mates. A lot of what is done depends on teamwork and mutual trust.

I suggest all you 'normals' who don't go causing trouble, if you are not trained in self defense - carry mace or pepper spray. If this is not available, then a small perfume-type spritzer filled with household ammonia might be a reasonable idea.

What price a little self defense if you are alone one evening, going home, and a bunch of scumbags wants to just give you a kicking for the sake of it? I think that any damages they suffer will make them think a little, and they'd have trouble pressing any immediate charges while they are stumbling about blinded and in agony trying hard just to catch their breath.

If it's getting that bad, then 'certain measures' are the only sensible response to take.

It's never a bad idea to take classes in defense, and if you have kids then get them taught young. I don't see why you wouldn't, if this modern age still sees many walking among us who haven't come out of the stone age.
