Yes Brendan, this probably is your strongest team. You're right.

Meh, it was only the Champions' League against Real Madrid. They're not going to win the tournament so what's the point? Far better to focus on those all-important three league points on offer at the weekend. Win enough league games and you can qualify for the, er, Champions' League.

It's just simply Premier League team Cup mentality taken to its logical conclusion.

From The Guardian match preview-

The Liverpool manager is set to rest $tevie Mbe for the game against Real Madrid with the reason being that “our priorities are the Premier League and [Big Cup] … always in that order”, which is fair enough, though prioritising the Premier League over Big Cup in order to get into Big Cup which you then overlook in favour of the Premier League in order to get into Big Cup which you then overlook in favour of the Premier League in order to get into Big Cup creates a kind of vicious circle that ends up with football eating its own tail and the timeline skewing down into this tangent, in which Biff is corrupt and powerful and married to your mother.

That last sentence is very apt considering your username! :lolol:

If I was a Liverpool fan who's travelled out there for that, I'd feel cheated. Rogers had already accepted defeat in that match before they'd stepped on the plane. What a message to give to your top players. They'll progress from the group anyway, so he's looked at it and effectively told all his 1st team players "look, lets face it. We all know you've not got a snowballs chance of getting a result her lads, so you just put your feet up, let the stiffs have a runout, hopefully the beating won't be too bad, and we'll just get this one out of the way eh".

So a club that proudly proclaims itself to be one of the all-time elite european giants goes into a game against Real Madrid and play the ressies, out of fear for the damage it could do to them if the 1st team got royally whupped in front of the world. Again. And so they can "concentrate on the league". This from a manager who has spent north of TWO-HUNDRED MILLION on his squad in the last 2 years. Laughable.

But it does just highlight where the prioritiers lie these days, and how the enormous prizemoney has skewed everything. Winning the Champions League, or winning IN the Champions League, isn't actually all that important any more. All that matters is being in it. Just finish 4th to satisfy the bean-counters, then anything else after that is a nice bonus, Arsenal have been doing it for years. 4th really is all that matters nowadays, its the be-all and end-all. Once you've achieved it, the prize has already been won.
