I've been lucky enough to talk to Ayari in the post-match mixed zones and he's a seriously impressive character. His belief in his own ability is off the charts and even at Blackburn and Coventry he trained every day as if he was starting at the weekend, which he usually wasn't, and when he's on the bench he studies the positions where he might come on and make a difference. He made the most of his chances with the new head coach on the Japan tour and I'm personally pleased that he has been the success that he has, considering that many fans had forgotten all about him during those two loan spells. A Premier League regular and full Sweden international at 21? Yes, there are aspects of his game that he can improve, but he has been a great asset in an injury-plagued season. How he'll feel when he gets fewer minutes next season with Yalcouye arriving remains to be seen ...

Nice story, thanks

I guess we don't know if any midfielders will be leaving, so I'm sure not all is lost for him here

Fortunately for Yasin I expect Yalcouye might have one more loan in him before he joins the first team!

That's assuming that Yalcouye comes in ahead of Ayari and Hinsh. Quite a big assumption at this stage. Ayari, it must be said, has been an eye-opener to us all this season.

Honestly think Ayari is the highlight of the season for me. While we mostly knew Baleba had the talent to kick on to top EPL class, Ayari's emergence has been a fairytale story given his average loan spells. He's just such an exciting player to watch, everything about him is pass and move and surges forward - gets you off your seat. A really good upgrade on "safety first" Gilmour

The rise of Ayari acts as a stark reminder to a lot of fans that when a lot of young (or new) players arrive at the club, it can sometimes take a while for them to settle in and start achieving their full potential. There is a reason players in that mould are recruited, as frustrating as it might be for some people.

Would you be posting that by any chance because he just scored his first goal for the club? Great goal, mind

Nah, that's not my style. Hence why I said 'The rise of', as opposed to 'After that absolute THUNDERBASTARD of a goal', etc, etc. He seems to have got better ("and better") throughout the season.

Plus, somewhere on here (I think in a 'Ones to watch this season' thread from the start of 23/24), I named him as, well, one to watch. I was a year too early but to be fair I – as some people would post – had a feeling about him

Really don't understand why people miss his contribution, usually quite understated but does a lot of tidying up and wants to get the ball forward quickly. IMO probably our 2nd best midfielder. He is a little bit undersized but that gives him great mobility. Up until Saturday his finishing has been poor though has not had many shots and did hit the post with a freekick. That said Hinshelwood & Gomez are not too far off and there are a lot of our players who have been poor finishers.
