TBH if it's one of the original X-Boxes it's really not worth fixing because it won't be worth much. As for the hard drive, you can get a transfer cable which plugs into the old hard drive and the new X-Box, this lets you transfer data across and wipe data from the old hard drive. I had a similar issue with my old X-Box breaking.

If it's the 20GB one it definitely won't be worth fixing, that's one of the originals. The transfer cable lets you pick and choose what data to bring across so if you have too much you'll have to leave it behind or delete it.

Are the HDD's on the original interchangeable with the newer 360 ones? I never had an original but I'd find it odd if Microsoft made it so you couldn't swap them over, might be worth a try if so.

The old hard drives aren't compatible with the new slim consoles, they're much too big.

It is actually a 3.5 inch Laptop HDD in a big case. I just took mine apart, bought a cheap case to fit the 360 slim and it works.
