10/10 a peace of piss!

Whats the betting all the people that get less than 10 are the people that sing the wrong words to GOSBTS!

We're going up AND we'll win the cup!

So far it seems that my theory holds and the people getting 10 are above 40 (BTW, I'm not saying that no-one below 40 will get 10 or that everyone above 40 will).

I reckon that this is one area where older is better.

For the countless areas where it's not, see Dave the Gaffer's thread.

9 out of 10 for this over 40, too.

And I knew which one I'd got wrong before checking it, as I tried to do it too quickly and realised my mistake too late. :dunce:

I got 9/10 too. I slipped up on the waved/waived question.

I got 10 out of 10 and I'm 24, but I did have the slight advantage of taking A Level English.

I agree with your point though, I really had to think about some of them, particularly the waved/waived one. With the increase in e-mailing and texting amongst younger people, the importance of accurate spelling and punctuation is being ignored.

Theory still holding up then (not sure when the cut-off point is, Pasty).

As I said, when I was at school (I'm 47 now, BTW) spelling was deemed really important. I first found out that schools had different priorities these days, when I shared a house with an English teacher and helped her mark her kids' homework. She stopped me correcting spelling mistakes with the words, "You can't correct mistakes, it discourages them" (and before anyone makes remarks about loony lefties, this was in a highly-regarded school in true-blue Westminster).

That attitude towards spelling probably explains why so many job application letters I get from graduates contain spelling errors. And it's why I predicted that the older generation would do better in a spelling test.

There is a simple reason for spelling worsening as the years go by, and we're all using them right now. Kids don't even write much nowadays. My 12 year old step-daughter does the vast majority of her homework on the pc and uses spellcheck. As a result, her hand writing is almost illegible and she's always asking me how to spell really simple words when not using the pc.

I think teachers should ban kids submitting non hand written homework.

That's true. But the example that I gave above was from 15 years ago when PCs weren't so commonplace. I think that the rot had set in before computers were so ubiquitous.

You're right though, the use of spellcheckers has made the situation worse.
