Wrexham chairman takes provocative action
By Nathan Davies - August 8 2004

Wrexham's opening day victory over Swindon Town was overshadowed by the antics of unpopular club chairman Alex Hamilton - the man who wants to sell the Racecourse. Hamilton decided to go for a walkabout on the Kop while the game was underway in a provocative show of power.

The incident occurred after the Wrexham Supporters Trust (WST) had completed a peaceful protest march through the town to campaign about Hamilton's plans.
Supporters of the Red Dragons deserve credit for not talking with their fists. The much-criticised chairman was only subject to critical chants.

The WST - who are raising funds to try to save the Racecourse and buy the club off Hamilton - released the following statement:

"Wrexham Supporters Trust would like to express their outrage at the behaviour of club chairman Mr Alex Hamilton during todays match against Swindon.

Mr Hamilton's one man invasion of the Kop End at Wrexham was an extremely provocative move at a time when emotions in the town are running high. Mr Hamilton has stated that he has no interest in the football club other than in redeveloping the ground.

We understand that this "stunt" was executed against the advice of the police and could have lead to a serious incident at the game.

It is to the credit of Wrexham fans that Mr Hamilton suffered no more than a few harsh words.

Trust secretary Simon Johnson outlined the fans concerns. "Mr Hamilton's behaviour was a crude stunt designed to provoke an incident at the game. Wrexham fans deserve credit for the restraint shown in the face of massive provocation. This action defies logic"

Trust member Lindsay Jones stated: "The police have enough to do at the game without having to deal with erratic behaviour from the owner of a football club. Given the size of the clubs debts you would imagine that Mr Hamilton had more pressing concerns than antagonising his customers. Over 3000 Wrexham fans demonstrated peacefully during a march through the town today and Mr Hamilton could use them as an example of how to behave at a football match."

Wrexham Supporters Trust will be contacting the Welsh FA and the Football League and requesting that both bodies examine the incident. Wrexham supporters have already complained to the police about Mr Hamilton's actions".

It's true and he's said worse.

It's not that he's not a football fan that's the main problem. It's the fact that he wants to sell the Racecourse.

I really think we need help Wrexham now. They're getting hardly any media attention. There local paper is pro-Chairman. Someone needs to stick up for them.

They've got Peterborough at home on October 9th. We don't play that day. Would it be worth going up there? Or January 8th they're away at Peterbough when we don't play and thats no to far.

Edit: I'm certain 9/10 isn't a cup date. Not sure about January.

Well done to all the Wrexham fans for their restraint in the face of such provocation. That doesn't mean the dick-head doesn't deserve a smack in the mouth though.

Aren't the northern based seagulls going to a match in September?

Blackpool away.

Yorkie. I think a few northern seagulls are going - on the left wing?

Personally, I am 100% up for making the trip in October.

Breaking news...

Taxing times for Wrexham Aug 8 2004

Wales on Sunday

WREXHAM FC will be hit by a winding-up order from the Inland Revenue this week, we can reveal.

The shocking news is the latest hammer blow to Wales' oldest professional football club which is battling to deal with massive debts of around £5m. The Inland Revenue is the club's largest creditor and is currently owed more than £884,000.

Officials are now demanding the League One club, which kicked off the new season at home to Swindon yesterday, comes up with concrete proposals to pay off its debt or face being wiped off the sporting map.

Dragons chairman Alex Hamilton - who was abused by fans at a walkabout at yesterday's game - told Wales on Sunday he expects the paperwork to drop through the Racecourse letterbox in seven days.

And he also revealed that the club's phone lines were disconnected on Thursday and were only switched back on again after he stumped up £1,500 to pay the overdue bill.

"The winding-up order is going to happen," he said.

"I have held discussions with officials from the Inland Revenue and they have told me we need to come up with concrete proposals to show how we are going to pay our debt to them.

"I'm hoping to put them off but I am not confident. I have told them that we have an asset in the Racecourse that if it is used properly, will get them their money in full. But if they put us out of business they will only get something like 70 pence in the pound of what we owe.

"I hope they will let me get on with the job of saving the club but they want the debt paid off in two years' time and as things are at the moment we can't."

Hamilton is facing growing hostility from Wrexham fans over his plans to move the club away from their spiritual home and selling the existing ground and land for redevelopment.

But the Manchester-based businessman insists the door is still open to discuss options for keeping the club at the Racecourse. Last week he admitted the 131-year-old club could have just a year left to save themselves from financial oblivion.

About 2,000 fans turned up before yesterday's opening match for a rally outside the Guildhall to voice their opposition to Hamilton's plans.

They were joined in their march through the town centre shouting anti-Hamilton slogans by former Wrexham legends Mickey Thomas, Gary Bennett, George Showell and Alan Dwyer. Three thousand sponsored red balloons were released before the crowd marched through the shopping centre on their way to the Racecourse.

Addressing the crowd, Supporters' Trust member Lyndsay Jones said: "This sends a clear message out to everyone that we are staying put."

Former striker Gary Bennett added: "It's great to see a good turnout. This will show the people in charge of the club that we don't want them here or anywhere near Wrexham FC. Over our dead bodies will we be moving from the Racecourse."

The trust has 11,000 names on a petition demanding the club stay put at the Racecourse.

But Hamilton blasted: "If those 11,000 paid £100 each for the next two years the job would be done. People need to stop making noises and start performing. At the moment I am the only one performing."

Hamilton meets with fans' representatives tomorrow to look at their proposals for a multi-million pound building development which they believe will safeguard Wrexham's future.

We actually will be in the FA Cup that day.

So October 9th...

Just found out why we're not playing that day - England Vs Wales.

Games presumably won't clash so could support Wrexham and then have some friendly rivalry in the pub after..
