But we were talking about defenders weren't we? Or do you think DC coming back will solve our defensive problems. Maybe you'd better come with me to the netball

Yes I really do, we need someone to instill dicipline not just verbally, but to our shape on the pitch, we have individually talented players but no one who has the awareness that Cullip does, too often towards the end of last season players got caught out of position way too often because no one was keeping it together, Butters seems incapable of being able to keep the shape because he has to concentrate on his own (limited but steady) game, Charlie is similar and it was noticable how we manged to keep our shape when Chippy played, but will he be fit for a whole season ??

It takes a very unique individual to be able to really lead a side, but all clubs who dont leak goals have one, we are haemoraging goals, not just recently, but throughout most of the latter half of last season too, we are asking big things of youngsters up front, in midfield and if you sugest defence too surely that is just a bridge too far ??

We despretely need experience, and remember we didnt start that badly last season, if we hadnt we would have been down, we will not have a hope if we are bottom by Christmas.

We did OK after he left.

Yeah, that's what we all thought until NINE goals in THREE games in March :) Followed by another TONKING in Preston. Then some of us reined in the hubris and thought Danny could have helped out a bit :drink:

You can debate all you want but I reckon if Cullip was given the option he would refuse to come back.

I'm not knocking DC, of course he would make a big improvement on what we have now but you don't know who MM intends to bring in. If it's an injury prone Fish or Ashby or another older and slower player I would agree that DC would be better, but I would rather see some pace injected into our defence and whatever good points DC has, pace is not one of them. We can't afford to have two slow central defenders as well as a slow LB however experienced they may be

We started a 7 match unbeaten run soon after he left including beating Sheff Utd whilst he was a Blade.

We only lost matches after that because Kuipers was out injured.

Maybe, but that wasn't the question, the question was would you welcome him back.

And the only answer is yes. He was one of our best and most influential players of recent times, without him we wouldn't be in this division. Or Probably the one below either.

Are you seriously saying that we are better without him? It all sounds a bit revisionist to me, before he left you wouldn't be able to find one person who would have denied Cullip's quality and influence on the team.

I think with Jason Dodd now in the side he will be able to organise the defence better than butts (He was saints captain for about 10 Years and seemed to be able to command a fairly young defence)

I really believe as long as we get another center back (young) and possibly a left back we should be allright. DC was a bit of bully and didnt really help the young players giving them a bollocking after he had made the mistake. I think players like Hinsh, El Abd ect look a lot better after he left.

I doubt he would want to come back anyway.

I thought Hinsh was better even though I wouldn't have thought it before Cullip left.
I was pleasantly surprised. I hope he is as good comng back from injury.

It certainly seems that the younger players have come on a lot since Cullip left. Whether that's because they were previously suffocated by his presence or simply because they've had no choice but to improve to fill the gap he left, I don't know.

No! We could play Cullip in midfield though?

Uncle Buck might disagree with you, there...:D

Frankly, I don't want him back. Danny definitely helped us win more than a few games when he was here, but IMO there are players who have played better without his sergeant major approach.

Errr... the choices we are currently offered are Ashby (old) or Fish (crocked)...

I'd have Danny C back yesterday...

Yorkie has a point that he probably wouldn't want to come back here, but that isn't the question asked... it also tells you something about his relative quality...

Can't agree with that - Blayney and Shabaan did well. Only the Derby game was dropped because of the keeper.
