Would YOU be able to cope without electricity?

People will just drive to their school or whatever, and read the notice that's been put up (with pen and paper). Or when the electricity stops, do aliens go around emptying our fuel tanks?

How is the fuel supposed to get into your tank out of interest? Just taking into account electric pumps and our 3 month outage.

well if this fictitious solar flare knocked out all electrical appliances, then i'm fairly certain unless you have a very old car, you need electricity to start the engine.

I seem to remember surviving the prolonged power cuts / rationing in 1972 and 1974.

In fact, it was quite good fun. I used a saucer filled with cooking oil and a wick made out of paper to light my bedsit.

I'm saying books and art would be an alternative to the internet. Food would be a problem, I agree.

I don't know if you are aware, but theatres use electricity to run as well. We can't all flock to watch our favourite play or opera yet!

this!
i think anyone with any inititive would just make the most of it and get on.
create local school groups, health centres.
men go out to hunt and gather, whilst the ladies look after the kids and prepare food.
whilst in the evenings, we all sit around fires, drinking moonshine singing gay merry tunes to each other about the days hunt etc....
bring it on!!!!

it would be difficult. any work outside agriculture relies on electricity, and even then the farms and processing plants need it. generators are ok for a house or a small office, but dont cut it for a large factory. even if you could fire up the lighting, the computer, what are you going to do with no internet as the local exchange is offline?

however, its not likely to be a long term issue. individual appliances might be bricked (probably alot of fires ensuing) but the main gid would probably survive pending some fixes to burnt out equipment. the national grid would protect us somewhat as the effect would be spread out, apparently they have contingency plans for this that involve opening circuits to parts of the grid out of use to soak up the energy. note on cars, they are effectivly a big faraday cage so should be fine. anything older than about 15 years, or anything with a carburettor would definatly be OK.

its all fairly moot though as the liklhood is vanishingly small. there as supposed to me a massive flare hit last month March, it didnt have the anticipated effects. seems our magnetosphere is more resilient than we think.

I've managed without my phone for two weeks when I went to Kenya, but I had lots to keep me entertained. Two weeks or more at home without electricity would be hell, I'd probably spend lots of time out running or seeing people though.

Fuel is already in my tank. It's already in most people's tanks. Pay attention. The day the flare strikes, our tanks don't suddenly empty.
