World Cup Watch - Goalkeepers

Trying to move on from the Terry saga, and looking again at the promise that this year could be our best chance of winning the Cup in a long, long time.

Last night I was talking with a mate and going through the squad, picking personnel. The midfield, and forwards are currently, in my eyes, picking themselves, and theres not much indecision.

The defense is a slight worry, I guess with players not playing regularly, including our new captain, Rio Ferdinand. But I think picking enough for a squad shouldn't be a problem and come the end of the season we should have a pretty solid back four.

But this leads me to a big concern I have. Goalkeepers. Now I know goalkeepers shouldn't be picked soley on form, and the players infront of them can have a big effect on how they perform, but it currently isn't looking great.

Again, obviously yesterday alone won't have any say on who is picked for the World Cup, but it does give a good indication of how our keepers have been doing this season.

Davies James - most of my mates #1

Conceding 5 against a strong Manchester Utd team, with a poor defensive line up in front of him (including 2, some would say 3, own goals). I felt he could have done better with two of the goals.

I had hoped he'd move in the January transfer window. Surely staying at Pompey, who are pretty much a deadset for relegation, isn't going to give him any confidende what-so-ever going into the World Cup.

Also very prone to the odd stupid error. But then most keepers are.

Robert Green

Conceding 2 goals yesterday, one of which could be put down as a stunning goal, or perhaps a goalkeeping positional mistake, the other, was just an average goal, perhaps a better keeper could have saved it. Again, fighting a relegation battle. Pretty decent, and in with a shout. However, hasn't had the best England career so far.

Paul Robinson

Despite one pretty good save, had a stinker yesterday, conceding 3 goals. Obviously not helped out by his defense, which at Blackburn isn't great. Least they are not in the relegation battle (currently).

Ben Foster

Not even warming the bench at Old Trafford.

Joe Hart

My call for the World Cup. Been very impressed with this lad. Even when he was at Man City. The move to Birmingham looks to have been a good one, with them flying up the table, with a fairly good back 4 infront of him. The only slight concern is his inexperience, but the best way to get that is playing in these competitions. Obviously been the England U21 keeper before. With the England back four infront of him, I'd be happy for him to be keeping goal at the World Cup.

Chris Kirkland & Scott Carson

To throw two more outsider names into the pot.

What do people think? Who would you take to the World Cup on current form? Anyone else slightly worried by this position? Am I thinking too much into this?

I always think the goal keeping position at big tournaments is a major position. Especially when you throw the possibility of penalties into the mixing pot.

Joe Hart is easily the best 'keeper of all our options at the moment. He has been playing consistently well all season and is playing with a team who aren't actually battling relegation at the moment.

If it weren't for him I'd be seriously worried about the England position

I think all those Irish caps might get in his way, as well as the fact that as an Irishman he is genetically predisposed to hate the English

Being a gk myself, i really like the way Joe Hart plays and think he should be our number 1 going into the world cup.

Ideally we would like our #1 to be playing for a "Big 4" team, with a load of Champions League experience and is used to a big game, but we don't. Yes David James has played in many International Tournaments but if he is past it (and i think is getting there) then he shouldn't be #1 just because he has been there before. If he is playing badly, and i have have to admit i haven't seen him play in a while (because he was second choice to Asmir Bergovic). So being second choice GKr of the worst team in the Premiership doesnt fill me with confidence.

Joe Hart was mentored by 2 great goalkeepers, Schmeichel and Seaman, at man city and you can tell he has everything (size, bravery, good hands, great distribution, comands his area quite well) that a good gkr needs. Playing for Birmingham is a great move for him as he is building confidence and winning the team matches and points.

I think, and if Capello sticks to his guns, that Hart will be #1 at the world cup and will definitely play in the friendlies leading up to the WC.

Remember, Cassilias was 19 when he became Real Madrid and Spains #1.

Can't see why it wouldn't be Hart - been in brilliant, consistent form for well over a year now. If it was any other position, he'd be a shoe-in ... his age shouldn't be an issue.
