I work in business development for a facilities contractor in London. The job entails making new contacts, chasing leads and bringing new business opportunities to the company. I go to meetings and try to network but mostly I'm on the phone or emailing potential/existing contacts.

Anyway, because all I really need to be able to work is a phone and my computer, on Fridays I work from home so today, Monday, I have my laptop etc with me. I had a dodgy stomach over night and thought I'd stay at home and work rather than chance it on the train and spending the day rushing to the office bog. I'd much rather splatter my own pan in comfort than use my work's tiny loo.
Once I had called work to let them know I would be working from home my intentions to work hard disappeared and I've been slacking ever since and my stomach is fine now. I think the reason for slacking is that my boss is on holiday this week and next so the only way they will know I've done bugger all is by going through the phone bill to track my call rate activity when it comes in. By the time it's in my boss will be back but chances are she won't be told I worked from home today so she won't think anything is up.

So, what would you do in my position? Work hard so that I don't have to answer any questions or exaggerate my bad stomach when I go back to work tomorrow? Or stop working and have a free day off? I've only worked from home for the past two or three Fridays so is it natural that the hard work ethic is wearing off?!

To be honest, if I am doing Help Desk support which I do 50% the time I might as well be at home too. As a very large number of faults can be fixed over a network by remote access tools a lot of the jobs that used to be done by Desktop Engineers are now fixed that way as is software installation.

if you withhold the number and dial a phone , is it listed on the bill as itemised ? If not , just withold and ring your house number several times whilst furiously wanking to YOUPORN

As most people on here SHOULD be working, you probably won't get a very balanced answer. Do as little work as you can get way with.

I work from home and find motivation absolutely no problem. Also in a similar job to yourself.

you've got/had a stomach bug, so normally you'd have called in sick. so any work you do is a bonus. If they have problem seeing it like that you know what to do next time.

Good answer, you're effectively working on a sick day.. You trooper.

p.s... there is no such thing as "working from home".... just so we're clear.

The bill will be itemised so I just need to have as many calls made as possible. I've got loads of companies that I call regularly where the person I need is on voicemail all the time so I've been calling them and also loads of companies have an options menu (press 1 for...press 2 for...etc) so I can call those and it will look like I made a 2 minute call even though I hang up before going through to anybody.
I'm also proud that there's no porn on this computer so I'm listening to music instead - I can't be arsed to keep switching to my own laptop. I want to keep the work one clean!

I'm going to say that I was really suffering and had a lie down amidst all the loo trips. I did some callling first thing and maybe I will do a bit more later just to show I forced myself through it

When I'm officially working from home I cane the calls as best I can. Trouble was today I probably could've gone in so I was in a slacking mood from the beginning and it tailed off from there. If my boss was at work, and liable to call me to see how it's going, I would make sure I was busy.

I'm based from home but have found myself more inclined to work from the office these days. Although i suppose you can only watch so many repeats of Malcolm in the Middle & Futurama before the boredam kicks in!
