anyone work away during the week and stay in hotels it bores the shit out of me.... hence y ive posted this!!! anyone on here stay away and what tips to liven it up?

Hah ! Sat in a hotel now (in Sao Paulo)..........third week out of the last five I have been away, and have another two weeks away in Feb

My routine is usually very early up, go to hotel gym, work all day, go to bed early. Always bring a book or two, download a few podcasts and TV programmes to the Ipad and get the locals to come out for a drink or two if I can. Rock n Roll.

Did it for 10 yrs all round the country and the only time it was good was when working at RAF Cosford we rented a house for a year ,better than digs any day.I will add i was mid 20's at the time so if overtime or night work was available i'd do it ,otherwise it was Pub till midnight and up at 6.

did it ten yrs ago every week then stopped because it was too much, but now for some mad reason allowed myself to be talked into it again... casinos and partying will kill me lol

In Sydney about to fly home. In last 3 months I have been in Sydney twice, jo'berg twice, North Carolina, Bangalore (no longer home despite the name) Amsterdam, Brussels, Frankfurt, toulouse. I am in toulouse again Monday and Joberg both the two weeks after that. Just tires me out! Usually locals or other people to have beers with. I take my gym kit with me but rarely get my shit together to actually use it. My main tip is to never stay in the hotel unless you want to sleep. Force yourself out, even if on your own. You will meet people or can just people watch, it is better than another room service meal.

Was doing it 2 nights a week for about 2 years; it got very boring very soon.

Take you trainers and/or speedos and do a run or swim after work is the only advice I can give. I also got through a load of books.

The highlights were when the Albion had a midweek away game within 90 mins drive of my location.

Gave up a permie role in December to set up as an IT Contractor. So I am expecting to experience it very soon

I used to do this and i woold look for open mic nights nearby particularly comedy, just to watch.
they're free to go in and usually pub prices, you can just sit at the back listening and you dont look silly or out of place on your own.

Done jobs for the last 20 odd years involving traveling different locations, cultures lengths etc and to be honest it bores the pants off me now. As others have said stay in hotels with Gyms and/or swimming pools keeps you occupied and healthy to compensate for the rich over eating.
Also get out of the hotel go for a walk anywhere although it can be crap if you are stuck in an isolated industrial estate but I have notched up hundreds of miles just aimlessly walking around.
One thing I am picky about my hotel now I expect a certain standard of living I am putting myself out not the other way round.

Only did it once for a few months.

I found a combination of picking a work colleague for recreational sex, a reasonable supply of marijuana and pulling all the wires out the back of the tv to attach my own entertainment system made time fly by.

Oh that and removing breakfast items from the hotel and mailing them to colleagues back at base.

Why? All the jobs are in London and the South East. Assuming you can hack the vile commute. If you're based in Worthing you'll only really need to work away from home during a deep recession when you have to grab at whatever job is on offer, no matter where it is.

It's a good point - but I'm not sure I could stomach the London commute. Id rather a few nights away each week. But we'll see - at the moment there seem to be opportunities surprisingly close to home

Did it for 3 months in the summer. If i'm honest I miss it. Got to meet some great people and it was a nice change being somewhere different every week. Not the sort of thing I would want to do for years but I'd be tempted to give it a go for a year or so. I'm quite restless in my office now.

Currently in Hong Kong. Back home tomorrow. Singapore, Bangalore and Hyderabad last few weeks. Get out there I say and experience the food and people as much as you can. Anything is better than being sat on your backside bored senseless going stir crazy in a hotel room.

It can be all right. I had to do a few weeks in Dubai though - that really was a miserable experience.It was too hot to walk anywhere (and there was no-one to go to if I did). Went to work and stayed in hotel night after night - at least there was a pool.

But I've also been in Paris and Holland for a week - those were good trips
