A geological term used to describe the material above a thrust fault plane which during times of deviatoric stress moves over the stationary material beneath the fault plane- this is known as the allocthonous material.
Maybe.

But that doesn't account for the way the word is used in a passage like this:-

Herodotus first emphasizes ancestral Athenian weakness in the story of their origins. He takes their claim that they were autochthonous, but uses it to prove that they were barbaric rather than Hellenic and weak rather than strong. For Croesus discovered that the Doric race was originally Hellenic and the Attic Pelasgic, and that while the former was 'much-wandering', the Attic had 'never yet moved out of its territory in any direction'.

I've always thought HEGEMONY implied a dominant or powerful group within society or between nations ?

Perhaps I should look it up !!

yes it does in geology the term would be used to describe the stratigraphic layer of weakness that was responsible for the movement along the fault plane.- hence weakness is the key here...

Any help with 'heinous' - I know it's really bad, shocking etc... but what are the origins - it doesn't sound like any other word I know.
