We all know that Brighthelmstone over the years change to what we now call
Brighton.

I was thinking, do you think the word husband has been shortened down from the word housebound?

'Slut' has changed over time. It used to mean someone who was slovenly rather than promiscuous.

I believe the phrase "opinionated wanker" derived from the latin for "North Stand Chat User". True story :D

Idiot used to mean someone who didn't vote (or be engaged in politics) - it's a usage that I'm trying to revive

I turfed some kids off a bowling green in Preston Park. They grumbled as it was `sick' and the rest of the park wasn't.

He was quite right. That particular bowling green has some sort of fungus growing in it.

This suggests that the term "husband" originally meant a house owner.

In medieval times, few people owned their own house. Husbandry was the raising of agricultural crops, usually in a smallholding. In return for your little piece of land, you would pay a proportion of it to the lord from whom you held it. You were "bound" to the land and the house you lived in.
