I need to upgrade my PC from Windows ME to Windows XP, does anyone know the cheapest way to do this?

Lick your fingers and stick them in a plug socket while standing barefoot in your own piss.

Looney stop involving me in your sick porn fantasies. I will not be licking my finger, sticking them in anything, removing items of clothing (even if it is just my socks) and pissing anywhere near you. Why don't you stop sublimating your desires into what you feel is a socially acceptable form of conversing and just accept you are as gay as a tangerine and move on.

Nicely predictable gay slur followed by salute smilie. Well done Gooney, at least I actually put a bit of thought into mine, you couldn't even manage that.

You know I've been in IT for quite a few years but I've never seen that method before, perhaps you'd be so good as to demonstrate it for us.

If you want Windows XP to be secure enough to actually not fall down and die faster than a Turkish hooker with every STD under the sun you'll have to buy it - no updates for pirated copies.

Also beware that a computer that came with ME won't nessacerily be too fast in XP. Or even usable.

Do you know your system requirements Les?

Is your system slow, stutters and crashes?

My mum has got an ME, 5 years old and it is become knackered. Won't last another year.

A 5 year old install of ANY version of Windows is knackered by definition.

Indeed, a 5 year old install of any OS is going to be crufted to death... but particularly a Windows 4.x series (95, 98, ME)

by the way dont upgrade ME to XP.

Format the drives and then install XP fresh.

Well, theres Autopatcher, or use a VLK that hasn't been added to the ban list in the current version of WGA (but likely will be when they update it)

If you don't mind running an XP with more holes in that one of Audrey's arguments, you don't need to pay for it at all ;) - its just the updates that require "Windows Genuine Advantage"

Actually I have PMed all that info to Les as it is and he's now considering a new PC. I have to say that having worked with XP since it came out I can't say that I've encountered the problems you imply whereas I wish I could say the same for Unix offspring.

I would say that XP Home is a very stable system only let down by bad third party drivers and badly written software like Lotus Notes not to mention some of the execrable Web based systems I've encountered. I am pretty happy with XP Professional and should shortly be grabbing hold of a Beta Windows Vista although the minimun spec (which means it will take half an hour to boot in reality) is steep.

Actually, hate to tell you but you're wrong there. If you have incompatible software such as an old AV or hardware that is not compatible you'll wind up with a lot missing if it works at all. A migration will let XP decide what it can use and what it won't. If it falls over it will back out and take you back to a working ME system.

I know because I've seen this happen a number of times and any PC running
ME will be a bit long in the tooth. I mentioned this to Les too.

ME->XP is a little bit dodgy in my opinion, but for 2000 I'd agree. But the system HAS to be in a clean condition for it, and using an XP SP2 disc in the first place helps.

2000->XP upgrades leave more of your settings intact than a reinstall of XP does.

I've no intention of using Vista until I Absolutely Have To. I got XP for free the day before launch day (legit free, not stolen free) and only moved my Windows box to it as, despite being from 1997, it met the specs) - but none of my computers will run Vista at all usably it seems.

Don't do anything yet...Wait til the Autumn - Windows Vista will be out and is 100 times better than XP

The minimum spec for Vista is half a GB of RAM and a 800Mhz processor, well outside of what an ME machine would reside on. I was telling Les that recently I have been working on PCs that were software upgraded from 2000 to XP and they ran like Dogs. (FYI, the Minimum Spec for XP was 128mg Ram and 300 Mhz processor. The laptop I'm using right now has half a GB of ram and a 800Mhz processor and it struggles, especially as I now use a Beta Office 2003, you figure it out. Something else to remember is that an ME machine will have application software that won't work with XP let alone Vista, I found that out the hard way more than once.

And although I will be testing Vista very shortly don't believe the hype, Microsoft are good at this but unless you're an anorak like me don't mess with it until Vista has been around for a year ! It's a good idea to have two PCs for this as you should keep one standard on a reliable system.

Do you really want me to explain the concept of 'Working' ? I suppose your lack of common sense is down to some lefty fag given your parlance.
