It's very easy for us all to have a self satisfied "ohh I know better" snigger snigger at the product but the stark reality is that it will still be the O/S of choice for the majority of the planet.

As much as I hate Tescos, they will still be pissing over everyone else with their overpriced sub standard offerings in 10 years times.

.. and so will Bill Gates.

I saw one major company try and jump away from Microsoft for their desktop operating systems a number of years ago. They had good reasons for doing so, and if I mentioned the name of the company those who work in IT would probably understand why.

They gave it a good go, but essentially chickened out when all their staff were unhappy with not using something they were happy with at home.

Recently (for the first real time) I've experienced exactly how bad Windows can be. When you work for a organisation that has to really tie down everything and add extra processes to the OS to ensure absolute security, the lumbering backwards compatible dinosaur simply grinds to a halt.

I work on my own laptop at work now, and simply use my work machine for email. Not having network / internet access on my laptop is a small price to pay.

It seems strange to me that there was all of this hype before Vista came out... 99% of people in my office are still using XP.. so they've really gotta go some to win over those big corporate clients.. which is going to be really difficult.

That ad though... oh. my. god.

I wouldn't have bothered buying it, but I'm entitled to a free copy which I installed just before the weekend.

On first impressions, I'm actually impressed - well surprised should be the word.

It's essentially a Vista that works. I've installed the 64 bit version, which on my little Toshiba is running very nicely indeed.

Windows also seems to work quite nicely after a fresh install, so I'll load up a few more applications and see how it goes, but on first impressions I'm going to give it a thumbs up.
