Having read the list of injuries we have right now you have to wonder whether the Premiership and Champions League workload faced by our top players rules out any chance of England glory in the future.
Ashley Cole, Terry, King, Owen, Bridge and, crucially, Rooney all injured to some extent. You also have to wonder how much gas Lampard and Gerrard have left in the tank after playing non-stop for their clubs all season.
You can make excuses all you like but top English clubs, unlike top English cricket counties, do not need a successful England team to make money at club level.
England regained the Ashes not because we had a talented side but because we have central contracts whereby the England management can instruct a county to rest an international player if they see fit.
Personally, I find it frustrating that Rooney was still on the field when Man Utd were already 3-0 down and the game lost but then I wouldn't expect Fergie to do England any favours by withdrawing him because finishing 2nd and not 3rd will make the club another 1/2 million quid.
