Wilkins DOESN'T like Robinson?

Schrödinger's Toad said:
Not sure what you're moaning about - Robinson's getting plenty of praise from the fans; what's wrong with the manager keeping him in check with a sense of reality, especially if he's the kind of player who'll let it go to his head and stop working in training?

I'm struggling to see what Wilkins is supposed to have done wrong.

If people treat Jake Robinson's goals as if they were an everyday occurrence, then maybe they would actually become.... an 'everyday occurrence'.

What we have to remember is the hype that met Jake a few years back when he burst onto the scene.

Did that affect Jake in any way? He has flat-lined for three years whereas others who he was way ahead of (like Coxy for example) have matured, caught him up and, dare I say it, overtaken him.

It's taken him over three years to develop to the point where he finally looks like he might reach that potential.

My take on this is that Wilkins doesn't want another load of media hype to affect Jake to the point where his development stutters once again.

Wilkins was instrumental in the development of Jake ... he then lost him for three years, during which time Jake failed to progress. Now he's got him again Jake is progressing again.

Coincidence?

Even though he got his chance due to Hart's injury, I think the fact that Wilkins has kept faith with Jakey in his preferred position of striker for the last three games is praise enough!

I think Wilkin's realises Jake have loads of natural talent but needs to also work hard because of his size.

Doesn't like him??

Wilkins has bestowed upon young master Robinson the GREATEST honour any man can ever hope to receive. He gets to wear the Blue & White of Brighton & Hove Albion so if Deano doesn't like our Jakey he's got a funny way of showing it

Sensible man-management as far as I can see. He simply doesn't want Jake either:

turning into a cocky little shit like Leon, or

believing he's ready for a big move, like Dan Harding, when he'd be better served continuing his development here.

Wasn't even going to play him in the Paint Cup until Harty got crocked. Could hardly drop him after he scored a goal (and was probably our best player in my opinion).

But hey, I'm willing to accept i'm wrong, the threat title is too strong - I just find it odd that a man who is ON FIRE at current form has got little mention from his boss.

But that is probably Wilkins way of doing things...and let's face it, I can't really complain, as Jake's come up with 5 goals in 3 games under Wilkins.

:)

It's not that Jakey isn't playing well on the pitch - he is. It's about his attitude to training. It's not as though he is disruptive - far from it. He just doesn't knuckle down and work as hard as he could or should. Apparently, he pisses about a bit too often.

If he can work harder in training, you will start to hear Wilkins praise him in public. Until then...

Jakes a lovely lad and his family are the most down to earth bunch you could meet. He'd never ever ever be like Leon K. I thought it was really unfortunate that the sports argus made a big deal about his dad, Dave, being at an arsenal match rather than watching jake's hat-trick - sorry, but he's been the most supportive parent ever to his boys - I expect if he had the chance for some arsenal tickets, Jake himself, also a gooner as well as a seagull poor boy, probably said "Dad, you've come to 99% of my matches, go and have a day off!" - obviously Dave's crystal ball wasn't working that day!

The centre pages of the sports argus were less than flattering about the featured 'yoof' team too - they made a huge deal about them accepting the 'Good, Bad and Ugly' - I expect the parents will be saying - so which one is my kid then? 66% chance of being either Bad or Ugly! lol! I got the sentiment behind it, but it was poorly phrased!

That's probably what it is.

I've read on here that Robinson is a bad trainer. Now there's little proof of that, but Wilkins comments seem to infer it, with him talking about ensuring Jake works hard on certain things.

So maybe the only element of dislike is more in frustation that an undoubtly talented lad isn't giving 100% every day? That I can believe - Jake sounds VERY confident when doing interviews, and maybe shows some arrogance/complacency on the training field? I wouldn't like to compare him to Leon, but maybe Wilkins is trying to ensure he doesn't go the same way.

:)

Wendy is just Victor Meldrew with a tracksuit on.

When we won at Blackburn last season in the FA Youth Cup 3-2 he had a right old GRIZZLE at the players on the coach heading home. It is just his way, don't read too much into it.

He also PRAISED Adam El Abd on Saturday for his efforts on the park, so he can be positive too.

And he looked well chuffed at the end of the game when the players came across to clap the fans

Nothing to worry about here. More proven managers than Wilkins tend to downplay particularly brilliant days from their young players, and Robinson's progress overall has not been great since being hailed the new hope at 17. I'm sure he's good enough to come again, hopefully this is the start of it.

and....

i think Wilkins probably knows JR alot better than most of us. infact, he is probably the most qualified person in football to pass any kind of comment on one of our youngsters.

i say fair play to Dean, i like the fact he talks to the media and i like his 'keep their feet on the ground' approach.

"Some of them are (kids) but they are starting to play like men."

The ONLY bit of praise in his post match comments, after the highest away win in FOUR years.

Only bit of praise? Have you read the same article?

"We are just starting to see now some of the quality this team is capable of producing.

"After the run of defeats everything was based around being solid, which I think we are achieving more every game now.

"We have been working on when we are in possession of the ball in the opposition's half, because players need to be able to switch from being really competitive to really composed.

"We saw glimpses of that. We broke at times with great composure and pace.

"A lot of the players are young but I've said to them I've got complete belief that they can win every game.

"Sometimes we haven't quite shown that, especially at home, but they have got enough ability and mobility to cause anybody problems."

As has been said, Wilkins is being careful not to get carried away. It is only one win. We've got to be able to do this week in week out. That's Wilkin's aim, and i think the way he's going about it is spot on.

Even in his interview after the youth team beat Chelsea he didn't exactly heap praise on the lads, in fact he said he was unhappy about certain aspects of the game.He obviously isn't one that gets too carried away when things are going well, just as he didn't get too down when things were going bad; signs of a good manager in my eyes.

Judging by Saturday's performance, Wilkins couldn't leave Robinson out of the squad even if he wanted to. He is hardly blessed with many alternatives.
