Albions opponents on Saturday Wigan Athletic, are hoping to reap the rewards from a pilot scheme which is being launched this weekend at the JJB Stadium. The stadium plays host to both Wigan Athletic FC and Rugby Superleague team Wigan Warriors. In an attempt to boost attendences for both clubs, Wigan Warriors' Friday night fixture against Castleford is being carried over to this Saturday with an 11.30am kickoff. Wigan Warriors fans attending the match against Castleford will have the choice of buying a discounted ticket to stay on after the Castleford match and watch Wigan Athletics Coca Cola Championship fixture against the Albion that afternoon, which will kick off as scheduled at 3pm. It is hoped that fans of both sports will take the opportunity to watch both teams on the same day, to be billed as "Super Saturday".
At present, both Wigan Athletic and Wigan Warriors are attracting crowds in the region of 8,000 - 9,000, but it is hoped that by introducing cheaper ticketing for fans to attend home fixtures for both clubs on the same day, the attendences will be further boosted for both clubs. JJB Stadium General Manager Des Clarke outlined the plans and how the scheme will work. "It's an exciting initiative, and one which could prove to be beneficial to both clubs" said Mr Clarke. "The Wigan Warriors match will finish shortly after 1pm, which gives us almost two hours to prepare the pitch for the football match to kick off at 3.00. This will mean taking down the rugby posts and installing the goalposts and nets, which can be done in less than half an hour. We will also carry out some superficial pitch repairs, erase the rugby pitch markings, and apply the football pitch markings. We've had practice runs over the last few weeks, and if necessary the entire process can be carried out in less than an hour, so we do not envisage any problems. The Football League have given us permission to pilot this initiative over the next two home matches, starting with this Saturdays against Brighton, and if it proves a success we may make it a permanent arrangement".
Fans staying on to watch the football after the rugby will be kept well entertained with a link to the Sky Sports News channel being shown on the giant screen, additional catering facilities being laid on, and Bingo. Those wishing to leave the stadium and return later for the football match can do so simply by retaining their ticket from the earlier rugby fixture. Arkwright Gristle, lifelong Warriors fan and chairman of the supporters club, was cautiously optimistic about the scheme. "Aye, I'll give it a go, like" he said yesterday. "Footballs for fuckin poofs, but if it means I can eat more pies on a Saturday then I'll stay on and try it out. Our kid can do t' shift down t' mill for us, and I'll be back in t' workhouse by half five like, so it's a small price to pay for watching t' Latics, like, its not like I do owt else on a Saturday, like".
What a crock of shit. The pitch will be f***ed for our match, and can you imagine what state it'd be in by the time winter comes. Absolute disgrace.
