Why do we taste wine in a restaurant?

An increasing number of countries are switching to screw caps, waiters should not be asking whether you require to taste the wine if there is no cork involved,no doubt they have a laugh at the customers who are unaware of the situation.

Except that it is not true, as others have already pointed out wine can be off in other ways other than corked

In the same way as some wines improve with age, others don't age well at all, especially whites or roses

Screw top and plastic stoppers are used purely because of the shortage of cork. They are just as good at their job if not better than cork.

Tasting gives you the opportunity to check that the wine in the bottle is actually the wine on the label (if you know enough) as well as checking that it isn't "corked" (which can happen whether or not a traditional cork is used as it is about a chemical reaction started by air entering the bottle) and also that the wine is being served at the correct temperature

So quite a lot of point really even if the wine you choose isn't expensive.

Remember if you have a second bottle of the same wine, always make sure you taste it after drinking some water and using a fresh glass.

Sorry Severnside - I don't think that's true.

"the decision to use screwcaps is one for the winemaker, not the marketeer. Winemakers who use screwcaps do so because it allows them to bottle their wines in optimum conditions, knowing that the airtight seal will guarantee that their wines arrive on the consumer’s tables in pristine condition." taken from the fascinating - International Screwcap Initiative website.

As Tyson Stelzer points out in his winemaking manual, Taming the Screw, the advantages of using screwcaps to seal wine bottles are numerous and may be summarised as follows:

No cork taint
No more sporadic oxidation
Screwcaps avoid flavour modification, including scalping
A reliable long-term seal
Cellaring
Recycling

Besides all the wine may be off reasons,I like to taste a wine to make sure it is served at the correct temperature.
Have been offered too cold a red wine before and more frequently, warmish white wine!
