Mind you, I will say this in his defence: he certainly knows how to play the media. The coverage that Cardiff City has been getting in the local press since his arrival is incredible. Welsh rugby is now relegated to the inside pages. I love it!

I think this just sums up the situation in Cardiff, they have a council that is keen to rebuild both the city and its image for the 21st century. Ironically the BBC breakfast TV programme was there yesterday, they featured the area around where the new Welsh Assembly was build, this has undergone significant redevelopment which is still ongoing.

It would appear that the figure of 60,000 is somewhat wide of the mark and initially the stadium would have a far smaller capacity, but it does nonetheless show significant ambition, what is wrong with that. If we move to Falmer it will hopefully be to a stadium that can be extended if we achieve any degree of success, Cardiff should be applauded for their forward thinking in this matter.

And good news for away fans visiting Cardiff too!

It's hoped that the new stadium will be ready for the start of the 2005/06 season.

The whole 'Leckwith Development' is a huge scheme which will cost a fortune (a figure of £80 million has been mentioned).

It includes an area of new community facilities (floodlit all-weather training surfaces, public football, rugby and 5-a-side pitches etc), a hotel with a built-in health & fitness centre, a large conference centre, the football stadium itself (with will contain various bars, offices, restaurants and a nightclub), a training centre for the football team, housing on the existing Ninian Park site, a new athletics stadium to replace the one which is being demolished, a large retail area (including a petrol station, fast food outlets etc), seperate car parks for the football stadium, the athletics stadium and the retail units, improved road systems around the whole Leckwith area and various environmental improvements to the site of the development such as cycle tracks, footpaths, monuments and so forth.

As the scheme involves so many improvements to the general Leckwith area (which is pretty grim at the moment), it is believed that the Welsh Assembly won't stand in its way. Here's hoping.

As an-ex Cardiff resident I can confirm that the place is officially a shitehole, however, in terms of football I've always seen us and Cardiff as having similar potential. The catchment areas are very similar in terms of numbers - 250,000 popn for both Cardiff/Brighton&Hove central, building up to 1m+ for both taking in the entire catchment area/outlying towns etc. A Premiership Cardiff should be able to attract 40,000 plus for Man Ure (most of those being Man Ure fans obviously) and a healthy 30-35,000 for other Prem fixtures.

With the upswing in the national team's fortunes and the Bluebird's increasingly heading in the right direction, football in South Wales might at last be able to challenge the rugby stranglehold and turn fans towards the beautiful game.

I should add that they should just blow up the shitehole that is Splott, kick out the resident drug dealing Splott dock boys and build the Stadium there, instantly creating an upmarket Cardiff.
