I am sure I read somewhere that it was a deliberate and widely discussed effort to piggy back on popular midwinter festivals to bring focus to the religion and improve it's popularity.I believe the biggest reason for Christmas on December 25 is the Roman Catholic Church really needed a celebration at the start of winter so that depression amoung catholics gets a push to the positive side of mental health so they can make it through to spring.
It's no coincidence that the two major Christian celebrations are at the same time as the midwinter and spring festivals in northern Europe.
Not much mention of decorated trees, a big fat bloke in winter clothing and chocolate eggs and rabbits in the bible.
