The only problems I've ever seen which have been caused by bouncers is when they are quite obviously not blessed with any intelligence. I've seen many an occasion dealt with swiftly and respectfully by a bouncer who actually is thinking, but the few that I've seen that have gone wrong are simply due to the bouncer not having the brains to not get wound up, and not use his fists....

The air of arrogance some give off is quite intimidating, but again thats usually the ones who are making up for lack of intelligence...lets face it - its not a particularly nice job, hours are unsociable and you watch other people get pissed and have a good time...

I guess it all depends on your view of what they are there for, my opinion would be that it is for the safety of the punters inside the pub/club, ensuring that the number of people in the venue does not exceed the safe limit and that those who are there behave in a responsible manner and don't endanger anyone else.

Some years ago, not in the UK, I saw four bouncers beating the crap out of someone in a club...I haven't a clue what the bloke did to earn his beating, there had certainly been a bit of a scuffle on the dancefloor, but it looked well OTT (I had seen one of them go into a cupboard and come back with what looked like a chair leg with a metal bracket still attached, but I didn't see him go so far as to use it, goodness only knows what damage that could have done). A good bouncer will diffuse a situation before it gets anywhere near fisticuffs, but there will always be a time when someone has to be manhandled and removed for their own safety...just no need to send them straight to A&E.

...pubs which don't attract thick, violent, pissed-up, testosterone-fuelled neanderthals out to cause trouble don't need bouncers on the door in the first place.

except most licences require city/town centre pubs to have door staff these days.

Bloke gets refused admittance to a club cos he's not wearing a tie.

Returns to his car, drapes a set of jump leads round his neck, and returns to club.

Bouncer looks him up and down and says: 'OK, you can come in, but don't try and start anything'

Techno party below Al duomos and I was dressed as scooby doo. Then onto the funky buddha where I was surrounded by 3 serbian bouncers, giving me the third degree because I had my scooby outfit on. Was made to take it off - still getting eyeballed as if I'd raped their mother. A friend of mine put it on in the club and the bouncers nearly dragged her out.

God forbid anyone has fun in a club. Where was the f***ing harm? DJs couldn't believe it either.

They are all, to a man, nasty shitty cnuts who wank themselves silly to ultra violent porn in their grotty bedsits off 7 dials.

I f***ing hate bouncers. If my children grew up to be bouncers I'd disown them.

Monkey men.

I think it's because they are failed body builders who have taken all the steroids over the years, leaving them with an old man the size of a baby carrot.

Over the years I've met some right tossers working on the doors of pubs & clubs throughout Brighton. I just wish they'd be honest & say they have been told not to let any blokes in. All this "where you from?" bollocks pisses me off. It's f***ing Brighton on a Saturday night, not Cuckfield Village Hall! I was out having a few scoops a couple of years ago when myself & a mate (Stubbsy) went to go into The Standard. This big Arab bouncer says "Where you from boys?", (yeah, patronising prick). Stubbsy replies, "Brighton, where the f*** are you from?" It was definitely worth missing The Standard off the route to see this meathead lost for words.

I did notice that bouncers seem to get more strickter once the 24 hour drinking law was alowed, but they are still twats and that is the main reason why i can't be arsed with clubbing anymore!

Bouncers in my local are fine, had to get them to eject some drunken fucker who wouldn't leave my sisters friends alone even after they'd got me over too loom ominously at him...

They do seem to tar all young men with the same brush, I frequent the bars in West St and have never gone looking for a fight in my life.

But in their defence there's been occasions when I've been grateful they've been around and HAVE been heavy-handed with some twat who's trying to start trouble!

Bouncers are so much nicer in Europe, they actually encourage you to go into their bars or clubs rather than try and find a reason not to let you in.

Bouncers are generally alright but you can get a few idiots, like the lot who used to give me grief wen trying to get into the Liquid Lounge (or whatever it is called now) in Worthing.

For some unfathomable reason they believed I was a drug user which I am not...I never touch them. The thing is they never actually accused me, just refused me entry and it went on for ages. I even avoided the club for 6 months before but they still would not let me in when I tried again...When one of my mates enquired as to why I was not allowed in the reply was: "He knows what he has done". After that on the occasions I was permitted enrty they searched every pocket, my trainers and wallet, even going as far as to seperate every bank note to check there was nothing untoward hidden.

Bouncers can be a pain in the arse...

They're nothing to do with the council.

Correct. From Brighton & Hove City Council's website...

Door Supervisor Scheme

All door supervisors who work in a Licensed venue need to be registered with the SIA in order to work. This involves completing an application form, undergoing a police check and completing a training course.

Door Supervisor licences have changed

During 2004-05 door supervisor licences and badges issued by local authorities and police were phased out. The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has been set up by the Government to issue licences instead. The need now is for only one licence to work anywhere in England and Wales. It will be against the law to work as a door supervisor without an SIA licence.

The SIA will only grant licences to people who have the right skills and training to do the job, and who can pass a criminal background check. SIA licences nave been required for the Brighton and Hove area since 28th February 2005. If you give your details to the SIA now more information will be sent to you.

You can give your details to the SIA on 08702430100 or register on the SIA website.

More information: Telephone (01273) 294429 for further information or e-mail us at ehl.safety@brighton.hove.gov.uk

The Liquid Lounge also throw out people for no reason what so ever (it happened to me once and to several friends) to get people out the club so they can charge more people to come in.

My solution: don't go to the Liquid Lounge. If everyone did the same they would have to improve or qo out of business.
