Why all this sympathy ?

The only people who think clarkson is joking obviusly haven't actually heard him being interviewed in real life. He means the bullshit he comes out with. He encourages driving at over the speed limit and glorifies in his doing so. His colleague is now in hospital becasue of driving a vehicle at excessive speed. I hope clarkson wakes up and realise the damage he is doing with his ever so 'witty' comments.

But i doubt, public school tosser imho.

I don't really have sympathy for celebrities who may perish.
I think, as i have most likely said before, that when my dad died when i was a kid and grandparents continuously fell like burning winged flies, i got used to death and couldn't give a shit about someone who dies on TV. A line was drawn. I could find hurt in the rampant deaths of all those who are politically maimed and financially hammered to death from poverty. But i can't give a hoot about Princess Di or Clarkson dying or Gordon Kaye being struck by a tree in hurricane season.

It does differ a little when there seems to be a relationship with someone i rely on. Cobain when i was still a junior or John Peel, or Elliot Smith stabbing his heart. They seemed a part of life and their end seemed tragic to me. What anything else thinks is entirely up to them and i can't force anyone to share my sadness in someone i once listened to. Death is sometimes funny.

Clarkson is an arrogant xenophobe.
I would quite willingly swop him for one of his scrounging asylum seekers he rants on about.

But surely death or injury is tragic regardless of whether someone is famous, or if you actually know them? I signed a petition yesterday urging the UN to step up their presence in Darfur. The murder, rape and ethnic cleansing of a people I know nothing about makes me sad and angry. Isn't it a good thing to care about such things, even if you cannot control them?

The people in Darfur have no choice or control over what is happening. clarkson and his friends do.

All they have to do is behave like responsible adults and stop glorifying the driving of cars at excessive speeds. It's not difficult really is it?

As i say, i can have sympathy for a life of torture and struggle.
I feel bad for the torn bodies of victims.

Yet TV celebrities don't really fall into that category do they.

I wasn't comparing Richard Hammond to the people of Darfur. All I'm saying is that a feeling of grief toward someone you don't know is not only natural, it makes the world a better place.

It is all a laugh, and driving fast is just what real blokes do.

Until someone gets hurt. And some mother or family have to deal with the consequences.

TV hosts etc, seem to me to be the exact same as soap opera characters. Its impossible to differentiate between the two as their existence is televised narrative. Just moments i can see with them in make-up and scripted conversation. They present quiz shows or announce things because of the confidence of their voices or visual character of their faces.
There are personal or broadened times for me to demonstrate or feel upset about unruly domination or glib demoralisation or the delivery of financial gloom without a second of remorse.

I can only speak for myself. I can't depict me ordering others to think just as i do. Even if i do think i'm always right. :)

I can't see why being televised de-humanises someone so we will have to agree to disagree. I was on telly once. Trooping the colour in 1981. I looked very smart in my cub scout uniform. It was only a brief glimpse of Jim so hopefully people will still be sad when I die in an unfortunate sausage accident.

They'll be planning the solemn-faced Top Gear Christmas Special about the whole thing already. Then, I imagine, they'll be carrying on as normal afterwards and greeted as brave heroes for doing so.

Despite all that, thank god he's on the mend.

Most of us on here are sensible, rationale human beings. So why the hell do people post things which you know will cause outrage/offense? You wouldn't say it in public so why post it on here? I'm no saint, but if I have a what could be taken as a derogatory opinion about something, that someone else is obvioulsy passionate or upset about, I wouldn't post it - isn't that common sense and respect?
