I was harbouring hopes that Luton would f*** it up, but it appears that they won't after two superb back to back wins in very losable games.

And anyway, we always take loads there so in that way they're preferable to Gillingham.

Did anyone read in the last Luton programme that Luton/BHA was once a grudge match? Why was that?

I've heard the same from my Lutonion colleague (he who goes by the name of Knuckles) - it may have been as far back as the 50s. Not sure what lay behind it.

goes back to around '69-70 'ish, maybe a couple of years either way. biggest clashes were at the kenilworth road game when malcomn mcdonalds car was overturned at the ground, full house game i recall. was there but cannot recall score though. am pretty sure the emnity began around 2 or 3 seasons earlier and initially kicked off as a result of some young fans being given a hiding in the park behind north stand. validity of that incident of course i cant vouch for.

back in the late 70's we played there and there was heaps of trouble in the ground, under the stand where the toilets and food kiosks were and also after the game in the town.

Karen used to go every week until that game, where she had her scarf pulled from round her neck and also had to dive into the ladies to avoid the fighting. Suffice it to say she stopped going to football and now only goes very infrequently

In the mid 60's and early 70's we had a fierce rivalry with Luton - much more so than other closer teams (Fulham, QPR, Brentford). At the time Luton had a decent side (including Bruce Rioch) and their fans were loud and violent. Our matches always seemed to attract the highest crowds of the season, but we didn't do that well against them. One match I do remember is a 1-1 away draw in (probably) 1971 when there was a massive crowd (for them) and lots of fighting and throwing things. At the time we were top of the league, although we'd played more games and Luton overtook us later on.

Of course, soon after we were introduced to C****** P***** and Luton became a dim and distant memory.

that was the one mate, probably the biggest aggro i'd witnessed up to that point and for a few years beyond. remember getting off the special at the station, meeting up with earlier arrivals and at some stage a few hundred walked into woolworths by one entrance and out thru the other with just about everything they could pick up. at the ground it was chaos. thats when supermacs car came a cropper. i know i escaped pretty well scot free but a lot of stuff flying around.

I know a number of Saints fans so I'm hoping they get relegated as I fancy a trip to St Mary's subject to ticket allocations and priority schemes etc.

As for the other two - WBA and Norwich with CPFC surviving by an Ian Dowie nose(sorry that's too big a margin)!

Ipswich and Sunderland with, hopefully for the financial reward, Sheff Utd but probably Derby or Wigan.

Hull, Luton and Tranmere from L1.
