This thread is starting to make me feel really old, I wish that I hadn't even looked at it.

I had a quick look to see what the number ones were on the days my brothers were born, I came up with the classics: Something Stupid and Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep, reckon I got off lightly!

I Feel Fine - The Beatles.
By the way Butterball, Edison Lighthouse was one of the most phenomenally successful groups of the 1970's selling over 15 million records worldwide, they just kept recording under different group names.

In front of the PC
It would appear that it was

Benny Hill - Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)

though a few days later it was

New Seekers - I would like to teach the world to sing (In perfect harmony)

Dublin, Ireland
UK - Aretha Franklin & George Michael - Knew You Were Waiting
Ireland - Exactly the same according to the chart database, yet I'd been told personally by the old git radio DJ who did the paper books of charts back in the days before t'intarweb that it was Rick Astley...
