This will make you laugh.

I had 20 pounds on Owen to score the first goal yesterday to win back 105 pounds.

Now as far as I am concerned the goal should clearly be given to Owen as Lampards shot was heading for the goalies arms before it hit Owens heels and diverted it in the corner.

Well what the hell are Fifa on giving it to Lampard. I could just understand it , if it had deflected off a Wales player not to give it as on og but It was clearly Owens goal.

Most bookies have done the decent thing and paid out on Lampard and Owen but not Ladbrokes, oh no, they will not pay out on Owen.

I am pissed off !.

Tough titties GG. I had a tenner on Lampard at 9/1 and was correctly paid out a lunchtime. Of course it was Lampard's goal. Owen knew bugger all about it.

By the way, the bookies pay out on who the Press Association award goals to, not FIFA. That has been the rule ever since first scorer betting was introduced.

If you're not prepared to accept the rules, don't bet!

TLB, what has Owen knowing anything about it got to do with anything. My understanding of football is that the goal is credited to the last player it touched before crossing the line. Is that not right ?!!!.:lolol:

Gareth - if it had hit the defender who would it have been given to? Lampard or own goal?

Totesport, Bet365 and Paddy Power have paid out on both. It's a publicity stunt, simple as that. A goodwill gesture to their customers. They will have won shitloads of money because most people would have backed in-from strikers Rooney and Defoe, who were the first and second favourites.

Not in this case obviously! And not in plenty of other cases either. How about Rooney's goal against Switzerland? Or Ferdinand's goal against Denmark? Neither of those two would have gone in had they not been knocked over the line by the respective keepers, but Rooney and Ferdinand were credited with the goals.

I bet you thought the ball had deflected off Delaney initially, like everyone else in my pub did. I bet you wouldn't be claiming it was an own goal if that was the case!

Also, I bet if you'd backed Lampard you'd be screaming blue murder if the Press Association had awarded the goal to Owen!

I think a ball deflecting off a goalie trying to save it is slightly different to it hitting another player in the team before going in TLB.

Your all just being cruel as you like to see me lose my money

I think you're right Gareth  The last player of the attacking team to touch the ball always gets the credit. Can anyone think of a case when this hasn't happened before yesterday?

The rule states that a goal is given to the player that kicked it when the ball is deflected, unless the shot was going to miss before the deflection.

I know that the keeper would have more then likely saved it, but itwas still on target. Therefor a Lampard goal.

Had Owen meanfully put his leg out and intended to make contatc then the goal would have been his.

In the case of Rooney's goal against the Swiss, the ball bounced back off the post, hit the keeper, then went in. It wasn't even on target in the first place!

In my opinion (and in the opinion of most other people too it seems), a goal of this nature should be credited to the player who actually struck the ball goalwards, not any player it hit on its way into the net, whichever side he plays for.

Come on GG, you're a regular punter. You know the score. You win some, you lose some. Or, in your case, you lose some, you lose more.....

Nope. In Italy there are more inclined to 'credit' the own goal to a defender if it deflected off him. But that's about it. A keeper doesn't get 'credited' with the own goal if he manages to get a palm or fingertips to it.

Extra instances of this occurence include Figo scoring against England in Euro 2000 - it deflected of our centre-half's thigh before going in.

However, seeing as the shot was on target - Paul Jones' position in this instance is totally irrelevant - it will be credited to Lampard. If the shot was going miles wide, and Owen had deflected it in - MAYBE it might be considered his. Even if the shot was going a bit wide, it would still have been credited to Lampard. But as I said, it was on target.

Too bad, so sad.

i would give it to owen.

a goal has to be credited to the last person it touches before entering the net.

that apart, i'm reasonably sure that had it not been deflected, jones would have saved it.
