Having Paid off my mortgage some years ago our last mortgage lender offered to to look after them for us at no cost, I assume as they are holding them we would go back to them for a new one etc.

I phoned them a few days ago as I wanted them in my possession and whilst they were happy to release them they told me they only has a Electronic version of them not the originals, but advise its not so important to have them these days as there not proof of ownership as the the land registry details who owned the property, but I wanted the actual documents, .

Am I able to find our where they are and who's got them?
Anyone in the business got any good advice?

Hmmm, sounds a bit strange, we have had ours for a number of years now, the lender was only to happy to hand them over, and they are the originals, with all the land details on them.by lender i assume you mean bank if so they should have the original documents even if it has been changed computer text..

Here, there and everywhere
When you update the information with the Land Registry and send them the deeds, you have to actually ask for the originals back, and send them a spare (certified) copy, otherwise the Land Registry will just scan and destroy them.

It sound like your bank didn't bother doing this.

When I last dealt with the Land Registry over changes to my boundary, they no longer had a set of decent originals and they couldn't actually process the boundary change, despite sending a man round! I think it is still in limbo.

My deeds were sent to me a few years back saying they no longer need to keep them as they were electronically held.

Have you asked the land registry?

Deeds are normally accompanied by various other documents that support the chain of title to the property. By them offering to look after the deeds on your behalf you were entrusting them to look after your property, which they appear to have passed on to a third party, lost or destroyed.
I would go back to the building society and make them get replacements at their cost.

Your mortgage provider would have held the deeds during the term of the mortgage and sent them to you with the evidence of the completion of the loan. Did a solicitor deal with the registration of this discharge at the land registry for you? If so perhaps they have the deeds.
You dont need them as proof of ownership as long as your property is registered at the land registry. However, have a word with them to see if they can assist. They may well hold some of the deeds in their files anyway but they would make a charge for providing them to you.
