I would think an assassination of Obama would have the same reaction. history has a habit of being re written. JFK was not as universally loved as is widely believed now. He was in danger of losing the 64 election, in fact the only reason he was in Dallas was that Texas was such a crucial state.
True there is that aspect.
But nevertheless Obama's legacy is getting murkier and murkier, at home and abroad, by the day.

Although history would be kinder to BO than it would have been to 'W', had something happened on his watch.

Yes that is undoubtably true but I can't think of many people who would leave a worse legacy than dubya.

not now. it might have if it were a couple of years into his first term, like Kennedy. all the hope all the dreams. they say JFK died before he could disappoint, i think that sums it pretty well. Obama has struggled to do much as far as i can tell, his dreams have turned to disappoinment.
