Whing, McNulty and Tunnicliffe - Why are they out of favour?

Tunnicliffe leaving on loan, McNulty not in Poyet's plans and Whing not even worthy of a place on the bench.

Most fans last season would have been happy for us to start building our defence round these three players.

Now they could all be shown the door.

Quite honestly when I saw Whing play at Brentford early in the season, he was pathetic. I couldn't believe thatr the previous season he was adjudged your best player.

So I'm not surprised he at least is out of the squad.

Easy

McNulty has been shit in his last few games
Tunnicliffe has been average but team shipped goals
Whing is pants at the best of times

In a team hugely lacking width - particularly on the left, to overlook McNulty is foolish, particularly for Painter who rarely attacks.

Perhaps this suits Poyet's more narrow back four set up, but it makes the balance of the team very narrow.

Tunnicliffe at times has been our best central defender.

McNulty has been in poor form, but I would guess that he's still in GP's plans. Only a few weeks ago he was praising Jim's ability on the ball (eg. winning goal at Exeter).

The same probably applies to Tunnicliffe. Virgo and Elphick are the men in possession but no reason to think that he isn't still in the reckoning.

As for Whingy, the fact that he was player of the year last year was a VERY sad reflection on the squad. He's a great lad who gives 100% but is probably not quite good enough.

Utter rubbish he has great potential but has been responsible for so many goals when he has played because he will not attack the ball and allows it to bounce which gives the forward the chance to grab the ball.

McNulty is weak in the tackle and will not challenge for a header.

Whing has just been exposed as not being good enough in any aspect of his play. This is sad because he looked a good player when he first arrived from Coventry but has graduallyt gone downhill since then.

At games earlier in the season, Tunnicliffe was a rock. I can think of Bristol Rovers away for one - incidentally the same game Virgo was sent off for two stupid first half tackles.

Whing has gone down so much since he arrived he won Player of the Year LAST season...

McNulty probably has more assists this season than Alan Navarro.

Virgo was out of favour when Poyet was first here, and now it seems he's very much in favour. These things change very often.

I am not saying these three should all be AUTOMATIC first team picks. But they should not be out in the cold, which they now are.

How does "on the bench for most games" (McNulty/Tunnicliffe) translate as "out in the cold"?

Might an alternative view be "providing real competition for places" which is what Poyet has been quoted as (and to a degree lauded for) wanting to create?

Whing as third or even fourth choice can accurately be described as being out of consideration but linking the other two greatly weakens the argument

No some people keep on harping about how good Whing WAS not how he has performed recently so yhey need to be reminded that he his performances have gone downhill.

Whing - Tries hard, tackles well, poor in possession - Poyet, with a premiership background is likely to want full backs who can defend and are competent in possession, hence Calderon who so far looks a promising signing.

McNulty - Yes he is great going forward, look at all the NSC comments about him, the words 'attacking' and 'flair' feature all the time. How often do the words 'great defending', 'good positioning', 'tenacious tackling' crop up? Surely defending is the prime skill of a defender? It appear Poyet doesn't rate him as a defender.

Tunnicliffe - Am a bit surprised by this - personally I'd find it very hard to choose between Elphick, Virgo and Tunnicliffe for the back two. All have made howlers this season, all are pretty good players at this level.

When ever I have seen Whing play he has been pretty poor, fair enough this is only 6 or 7 times but I still not rate him
