Correct me if I'm wrong, but haven't the last couple of seasons been their highest ever finishes in the league by some margin?

They are also likely to break their all time record attendance next season.
They finished 2nd and 3rd in the Isthmian prem, which is equivalent to where they are now around 83-85.
Their peers at the time were Sutton and Wycombe, the latter who then went up and made it into the league within a few seasons (I think).

Edit - the Isthmian winners, Southern league winners and Northern league would then go into what is now the national league.

Polegate! When I used to watch them on Saturday afternoons in the 50s they played in MELCHESTER ROVERS colours - instant heroes to a small boy at the time!
Just down the road, as a little boy I used to watch Willingdon in their all green kit,.

I used to watch Hastings United quite regularly when I was a teenager and it always struck me as odd that such a big town plays so low down the pyramid. People would always cite the ground with it's lovely (but expensive to maintain) grade II listed main stand as a problem, it's also located quite far from the centre of town/any railway stations which doesn't help.

I know there was some plan sell the land (including the ghostly adjacent abandoned ground "The Firs" which I would always catch an exciting glimpse of through the trees) for housing and move to an even more remote site on a park next to an estate and some woodland. Others may know more than me but I'm quite glad to see that this idea seems to have stalled for now.

Thanks, I wasn't aware of this.

So National League South is what used to be Isthmian Prem - and so what used to be Isthmian Prem is now the Isthmian Div 1 south (for Worthing)?

I go and watch Lewes, like a couple of others on here, and I agree with their points. I'm torn on it though, because I want the club to do well and not struggle financially, but getting promoted to the football league would remove the things I like about going. I want to watch non league football, that's sort of the point.
Fully agree - the point of visiting Lewes is for some the quirky and unique character of the ground. That surely would change if Lewes got in the EFL

Yes, from memory they merged the Isthmian with the Southern League, which Crawley and Hastings Utd were in for some time.

Bognor and Worthing were always Istmian prem.

Edit
I think Wimbledon were elected from the Southern league around 1975, that was before the national league etc

I did some design work on renovating that stand as one of my first jobs as an Architect back in 1993. A glamourous task of getting listed building consent for new rainwater goods, repairs to steps and railings. Halcyon days!
