Like many others I was at work. One of the guys in the office took a call from his daughter who told him to get on the web as soon as possible. The news sites were so slow that it took ages to get any coherent information through. Spent the afternoon receiving sporadic updates from people at home who had their TVs on and went home to watch the whole thing played back time and again. It was surreal to say the least.

Thought about not going to the game that evening but decided that the first thing you must do is not change your plans because that is to give in to it. Very subdued atmosphere at the game but glad that I went as I think the claustraphobia of being at home that evening would have been too much.

Conicidentally, I'm flying this September 11th.

Just finished my MA and had moved back to sussex, saw the second plane hit on the telly and most of the rest.

A defining day for me politicaly.

I was driving up to Haywards Heath (listening to TalkSport) to pick up school kids. Dropped the last one in Angmering then had to pick up someone else at Worthing College. While there, I phoned the wife to get her to turn the tv to Sky news. She was speachless (first time in ages).

Sat in a boozer in Tainan (city in southern Taiwan). Suddenly pics of it appeared on their TV. Assumed they'd switched to a movie channel or something, until I realised it was the same on every channel. Phoned my mate who was in his apartment watching a DVD and didn't know anything about it, then carried on drinking.

At work. First heard about it on here. Went to watch the telly in the boardroom - all work ground to a halt, everybody just sitting there disbelieving. Saw the towers collapse live, remember thinking the death toll was going to be 20,000.

Got a bus from Chelsea to Clapham junction to get a train to the game, and was struck by how many groups of people there were crowded around television sets in shop windows, as if Man had just stepped on the moon or something.

It's not often that I genuinely don't give a toss about a 3-0 defeat, but that night was one of them - talk about an enforced sense of perspective. Spent the following morning trying to get through to friends in New York and Washington to make sure they were OK (they were).

Was working in London and watched the whole thing through a Curry's window in sheer disbelief. I spent that night trying desparately to get in touch with friends in the US.

I remember being on the train the next day and everybody seemed grey and very subdued.

Sat in the office, with the BBC news website on my screen.

I was, at the time, writing a paper arguing that the time had come to start up an international day of solidarity for the victims of September 11th, 1973 - the day that US terrorism installed a fascist regime in Chile that went on to kill thousands and act as the blueprint for both fascist governemnts in the Americas (like the one that invaded the Falklands) and continuing US terrorism against democratically-elected governments.

I shall continue to think about those victims on September 11th.

Was freelancing at the time and had a day off. Was listening to Talksport with Parry and Brazil when the first one happened and, fair play to Parry, he may be a bit of a twat sometimes, but that was probably his finest hour as a broadcaster. He'd lived for years in New York, knew every inch of the area and allied to his journo experience just talked for ages totally off the cuff about the horror, the buildings, the neighbourhood and the likely response of the emergency services, painting an incredible picture of what was probably going on with very little information from a long way away.

Turned on the TV to see the second one, and just stayed glued to it for about six hours.

Also upon hearing that one flight had come from Boston I immedialtley rang my auntie, uncle & 2 younger cousins who live there. Thankfully they were at home (apart from Unc who was in Ireland), spent 50mins on the phone to them from work...nice phone bill they got that month but it was worth it to know they were OK

Too far from the sun
At work - I was chairing a conference call which was supposed to start at 9am NY time and included some colleagues in a building directly opposite the North tower. None of them had phoned in by about 10 past, which was unusual. I checked my voicemail and had a relatively calm message from one of them saying that a helicopter had hit one of the towers and they had to get out. Shortly after my boss phoned to give detailed view of what happened - he was on 51st floor of a building right across from the North tower. He felt the first plane hit and was watching the chaos when he saw the second one go in. Needless to say he didn't hang about and legged it down the emergency stairs before the alarm went off. I then spent the rest of the day trying to track down other colleagues who were in the 7 WTC building (which later collapsed after it caught fire). All were OK, expect one who got slightly hurt when a severed arm hit him on the back as he left the building...

I was working at American Express in Brighton as usual, when there were suddenly a few mobiles ringing and whispers going around the office that there had been a bomb in New York. The Amex building in NY was right next to the WTC towers and was actually severely damaged. I turned to the internet for information on another message board that I use regularly, mainly filled with people from the US. Those with TVs were posting constant updates for everyone else who couldn't see what was going on. It was prolly one of the most informative and fast-moving sources of information on a day when the net crawled to a stop.

After a short while, I decided to leave work and drive back home so I could watch it on Sky. I figured that there wouldn't be any work getting done that day and no-one would really notice my absence.

In my computer
I was down in the trading room on the 2nd floor and saw the first plane hit on the TV's... I had to head back to my desk to see what we needed to do as the team I work with had to prepare the headcount reports of who worked in the WTC - we all went into a weird quiet mode and worked our arses off to get the reports prepared so people could start checking that everyone got out.... I didn't really clock what happened until I got home that evening and watched the whole replay on the tv....I think I was in disbelief for about a week....
